CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Commercial vehicles’ brakes are being checked by state regulators this week as part of a safety initiative.

The Public Service Commission’s Transportation Enforcement Division is conducting the inspections at weigh stations on Interstate 64 East in Winfield, Interstate 77 North and South in Mineral Wells, Interstate 79 North and South in Fairmont, and Interstate 77 North at the Bluestone rest area near Princeton.

The PSC says the inspections began Sunday and will continue through Sept. 14 as part of Brake Safety Week.

PSC chairman Michael Albert says the goal is to eliminate highway fatalities in West Virginia.
