Logan County Schools has had to close on multiple occasions throughout the month of January due to severe weather. Snow and frigidly low temperatures has been responsible for at least 10 snow days in January. Due to that loss in instructional time, the Logan County Board of Education has made changes to the 2013-2014 school calendar to make up for lost time.

The first update is in regard to AIT(Accrued Instructional Time) Days. AIT Days are usually early-release days for students, but they will now become full-instructional days. The two remaining AIT days for this year are Wed., Feb. 5, and Thurs., May 1. On both days, schools will follow a regular schedule.

Additional instructional days have also been added for students. Each year, the Logan County Board of Education saves several days at the end of the school calendar that, if needed, could be converted to instructional days. May 29-30, June 2-6, and June 9 will now be full-instructional days.

The last day of school for students for the 2013-2014 school year is now June 9. The last day for teachers and staff is now June 11.

Assistant Superintendent Junior Amburgey says these are the only changes made to the calendar at this time.

“No decision has been made to have students report on Faculty Senate (ISE) Days, but it may be necessary if additional instructional days are lost. Spring Break (April 14-18, 2014) has not been affected, and high school graduation will still be held on May 22 and 23, 2014.”

Committees are now looking at the 2014-2015 school calendars which will include new laws requiring the number of instructional days. WV Code 18-5-45, 18-5A-5, 18A-5-2, and the WV State Board Policy 3234 state that schools must be in session no less than 180 days for the 2014-2015 school year.

The Logan County Board of Education will host two public hearing prior to the approval of next year’s calendar. The hearing dates and times will be advertised at least 10 days prior to the hearings. Each county is to have a school calendar submitted to the West Virginia State Board of Education prior to May 1, 2014.
