MAN — The Man High School volleyball team split with Class AA teams Wyoming East and Mingo Central on Tuesday in its home opener.

The Lady Billies now stand at 6-2 on the season.

Man beat Wyoming East 25-13, 25-14 in the first match, then fell in a close one to the Miners, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, as Mingo Central won after the match was tied at 24-all in the decisive third set.

Man coach Orlando Washington said his team is improving steadily and playing well but need to be able to win the close ones.

“The Mingo Central match was back and forth,” Washington said. “I feel like we have to learn how to win the close matches and learn how to play in tight situations. When we do that we are going to be very good. Once we can get past some of our growing pains we can take off.”

Washington said too many service errors against the Miners ended up being the difference.

“If we had served better we could have won,” he said.

Washington said his tallest player, Tiffany Belcher, was good along the front line. Belcher stands more than 6-foot tall.

“Tiffany Belcher spiked the ball very well,” he said.

The Lady Billies are scheduled to return to action with Thursday’s 6 p.m. match at Sherman. Man then is set to play in the Westside tourney on Saturday before going to Wyoming East on Tuesday in Man’s rematch with the Warriors.

Man hosts Buffalo on Sept. 26 and hosts Chapmanville and Lincoln County in a tri-match on Oct. 1.
