MAN — The Man Middle School football ran its record to 5-1 on the season with Thursday night’s 20-8 victory at home over Sherman at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field.

Man, coached by Tootie Carter, travels to Chapmanville on Monday at 7 p.m. with the county championship on the line. The Pioneers then host Duval on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale.

Man got on the scoreboard first in Thursday night’s game, taking a 6-0 lead after a scoreless first quarter of play as Pioneers’ quarterback Zack Cook tossed a 5-yard strike to Chris Walker for a touchdown at the 7:14 mark in the second quarter.

That would be the only score of the first half as Man led 6-0 over the Tide at the break.

The Pioneers later cashed in on a Sherman fumble at its own 2-yard line. Just two plays later, Man was in the end zone with Cook’s 1-yard QB sneak. Walker ran in on the two-point conversion play as Man led 14-0 with just 16 seconds to go in the third period.

Sherman got on the scoreboard with 7:40 left in the fourth as Tide QB Brandon Jarrett hooked up with Tucker Martin for a 70-yard TD pass. Will Hensley ran in the conversion as the Tide closed the gap to 14-8.

Man then answered with a drive of its own to put the win on ice as the Pioneers went 67 yards on nine plays, capped off on a 5-yard run by Chase Harvey with 2:52 to play in the game. The two-point conversion failed but the Pioneers held a 20-8 lead.

That’s the way the game stayed as Man held Sherman scoreless in the final minutes of the contest.
