CHAPMANVILLE — The Man Middle School football team secured the Logan County championship with Monday night’s 20-6 win at Chapmanville over the CMS Tigers.

Man Middle, coached by Tootie Carter, improved to 6-1 on the season and are scheduled to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at home against Duval in a 1 p.m. contest.

Coach Carter said Man’s defense helped drive home the victory.

“I thought our defense was the key. They played very well,” he said. “But our offensive line didn’t block well. We are going to have to work on that.”

Chris Walker led the way with seven tackles. Hunter Epperheart had six and Zack Maynard five, while Chase Harvey, Trey Whitt and Zack Cook had four each. D.J. Browning had three tackles, while Michael Sorrell and William Osborne had two apiece.

Man took a 6-0 lead with just 3:12 to play in the first half on a 12-yard jaunt by Chris Walker. The two-point conversion run failed. The touchdown held as Man led 6-0 at the half. The Pioneers cashed in on a Chapmanville turnover as Chase Harvey intercepted a pass to set up the score.

After a scoreless third quarter of play, Man built its lead to 12-0 to start the fourth period of action as Harvey had a 1-yard TD run to make it 12-0 with 7:32 left in the game. The conversion play again failed.

The Tigers then got their first points of the game on the ensuing kickoff as the Tigers’ Dylan Smith raced 61 yards to paydirt to cut the Man lead in half at 12-6 with 7:16 to go in the game.

Chapmanville tried an on-side kick but the ball only went 5 yards, giving the Pioneers good field position at the CMS 45-yard line.

The Tigers’ defense was then able to hold off Man and force a punt. After a good boot by the Pioneers, Chapmanville was pinned deep on its own 1-yard line.

Two plays later, Cook picked off a Adam Vance pass and returned it for a 17-yard TD to make it 18-6. Walker then ran in the two-point conversion to give MMS a 20-6 lead with just 4:22 to play, putting the win on ice.

Man and Chapmanville are scheduled to play each other again in two weeks in the Black Diamond Conference playoffs. A time and place has not yet been determined.
