Billies even record after sinking River View

MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team improved to 7-7 on the season with Tuesday night’s 75-71 win over River View at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Hillbillies placed four players in double figures led by sophomore John Thomas Keffer with 23 points. Freshman Daniel Buchanon had a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds while Jake Adkins scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards. Man also got 20 points off the bench with Kenny Joe Adkins’ 11 and Gabby Brown’s nine.
Man outrebounded the Raiders 49-31 and had 20 offensive boards.
The Billies were 18-for-23 from the free throw line while River View hit 7-of-16.
Man shot 41 percent from the floor as the Billies made 28-for-68. The Raiders were 14-of-38 from 3-point land.
Erik Files added four points for Man. Cameron Simpson had two points.
River View was led in scoring by Tyree Baker’s 23 points. T.J. Stacy had 14, Jordan Wilson 12 and Joseph McElenhan 11. Tyler Dehaven had four and Cameron Roberts and Demetius Duff added three each.
Man took an early 18-5 lead after one period of play. Jake Adkins netted six points while Buchanon tallied four points.
The Raiders battled back to outscore the Billies 28-16 in the second quarter of play via the 3-point shot.
Brown then hit a shot in the paint to give the Billies a 16-point lead at the 5:01 mark, but the Raiders caught fire, hitting back-to-back 3-balls by Duff and Stacy to make it 26-26 with 3:32 to go.
The Raiders cut the Man lead to a single point at 34-33 heading into the locker room.
River View then took its first lead of the night with 3:53 remaining on the third period clock on a basket by Dehaven to make it 42-40.
Keffer followed by hitting a 3-pointer of his own to give MHS a 47-44 lead at the 2:45 mark.
McElenhan hit a 3-pointer to cut the Man lead to 51-50 with 1:39 left in the third.
Baker was then fouled as he attempted a 3-pointer and drained all three free throws to tie the game at 53-53 as the third stanza came to a end.
Man then went on a 6-0 run on baskets by Buchanon, Kenny Joe Adkins and Keffer to take a 59-53 advantage with 6:55 to play.
Wilson then got a steal and fast break basket to cut the Billies’ lead to 60-57 with 4:08 to play in the contest.
Keffer followed with a floater in the lane and Kenny Joe Adkins drained two free throws to give Man a 64-57 lead with 3:44 to go.
The Billies pushed their lead to nine points on a fast break layup off the glass by Kenny Joe Adkins to make the score 68-59 with 2:31 to play.
Man then hit its free throws in the final two minutes of play to preserve the hard fought 75-71 win over the Raiders.
The Billies were scheduled to play at Phelps (Ky.) on Wednesday night. Man is slated to play at Class A sectional foe Greater Beckley Christian on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MHS then hosts Tug Valley on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
