The Chapmanville Regional High School track and field team had some success on Thursday in the Class AA Region 4 Meet at Charleston’s Laidley Field.

Chapmanville’s 4x200 boys’ relay team ended up being regional champs with a time of 1:38.55. The team is comprised of Jeffrey Lunsford, Joshua Vance, Andrew Thompson and Ethan Thompson.

Ethan Thompson also had a big day individually as he was second in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200. He ran the 100 in 11.59 and the 200 in 23.58.

Kade Sebastian of Wayne won the 100 in 11.36, about two-tenths of a second better than Thompson. Zach Marcum of Scott was the winner in the 200 with a time of 23.39, only 0.19 seconds ahead of Thompson.

Chapmanville’s Ryder Gore was fifth in the boys’ 800-meter run in 2:25.09. The Tigers’ Caleb Vance took fifth in the 400 with a time of 54.87.

The CRHS boys were sixth in the 10-team standings with 40 points. Herbert Hoover and Poca tied for the regional championship. Nicholas County was third, Scott fourth and Wayne fifth.

The Chapmanville 4x400 boys’ relay team also took second.

On the girls’ side, the CRHS Lady Tigers were also sixth in the team standings. Nicholas County won the regional title with Herbert Hoover second. Scott was third, Wayne fourth and Sissonville fifth. Mingo Central and Poca tied for seventh. Clay County was ninth.

Chapmanville’s Christina “NeNe” Osborne was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.39.

Tanisha Adams took third in the 200 with a time of 28.88.

Mara Mazzacchi of Chapmanville was second in the 400 with a time of 1:04.97.

The Lady Tigers’ 4x200 girls’ relay team was second and their 4x400 relay team took third.

Richelle Thompson of CRHS was second in the girls’ discus with a toss of 83 feet, 10 inches. Wayne’s Mica Mathis won the event with a throw of 90-11.

The Chapmanville track team is coached by Joetta Thompson.

Chapmanville’s top placings advance to the state tournament.

“I couldn’t be prouder as a coach or parent,” Coach Thompson said. “My 4x200 boys and girls made it to the state finals. The boys made first place and girls second. My 4x400 teams both boys and girls made it as well. The boys made second place and girls third. The other placings that made it to states were Ethan Thompson, my son, on both the 100 solo and 200 solo. He placed second in both events. This puts him in state competition in four events and I think this is a first time for any athlete from Chapmanville.”

Coach Thompson said Adams also performed well.

“Newcomer Tanisha Adams made it to state in three events, her solo being the 200-meter dash as well as the relays,” she said. “Junior Mara Mazzocchi made it in the 400-meter dash for the second year in a row. My daughter made it in the discus throw. She is just a freshman and she is only the second girl to ever make it to state from Chapmanville in a throwing event. Her predecessor was Kimmie Ellis who graduated in 2012. Richelle’s final throw was 83-10. My girls’ team scored higher at a regional meet than any previous girls team and I am super proud of them. We are also expecting Christina Osborne to make it in the 100-meter dash but that will not be confirmed until all regions have finished competing.”

Chapmanville’s boys’ relay team are all made up of sophomores.

“I have a young team with much potential for the future,” Coach Thompson said.

Thompson said she hopes to see track and field grow in Logan County.

“My hope is to see this extremely challenging sport become much more popular in this area,” she said. “In an attempt to help that happen we are hosting our second annual camp on June 11-13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily. This is for elementary and middle school age children. For more information parents may contact us at crhstrackcamp@gmail.com. We would like to invite people to attend the 100th State Track and field Meet at Laidley Field on May 23 and 24.”
