CHAPMANVILLE — And now Morgan County plays the waiting game.

Morgan County had advanced to the 11-12-year-old State Little League championship game after disposing of Central Greenbrier, 15-5, in four innings in one of Wednesday night’s state semifinals at Chapmanville’s Tracy Vickers Field.

Morgan County (3-1) was scheduled to play either Bridgeport or Milton on Thursday night in the state finals but the contest was pushed back to Friday at 6 p.m.

That’s because the Bridgeport-Milton game on Wednesday was postponed due to lightning and rain. The game was scheduled to be made up on Thursday night with the winner advancing to play Morgan County in the finals.

It appeared as if Bridgeport was cruising to victory late on Wednesday night as the team plated 10 runs on 10 hits in the top of the first inning. Bridgeport sent 11 batters to the plate and all 10 runs were earned.

Milton scored one run in the bottom of the first and had two runners on with two outs when the game was delayed due to lightning.

Then the rain came and after a lengthy delay, the game was called by the umpires.

The two teams were slated to start the game over on Thursday at 0-0.

Milton had reached the semifinals after rallying from a 9-1 deficit to defeat Hurricane, 12-10, in the quarterfinal round.

Morgan County scored eight runs in the second inning of Wednesday night’s game and led Central Greenbrier 12-2. The game was then called after four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Morgan County went 1-1 in Pool D, winning 6-5 over Madison last Friday but then fell 7-0 to Worthington Parkersburg last Saturday. Morgan County was still able to advance to the single-elimination knockout round.

Milton was also runner-up in its pool, starting off last Friday with a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Mullens. Milton then lost 13-10 last Saturday to Central Greenbrier but advanced.

Chapmanville is hosting the 11-12 State Little League Tournament for the first time since 2006 when it co-hosted with the Logan Little League.

This year’s state tournament is being played in honor of the late Jim Hicks, a Chapmanville native who dedicated his life to area youth sports and community service.

This summer marks the 75th anniversary of Little League Baseball.

The winner of Friday night’s state championship game will advance to the Southeast Regional Tournament in Warner Robins, Ga.
