After the 2013 Class AAA state championship girls’ basketball game Logan High School’s Hannah Tothe thought her basketball career was over.

She had risen from a 4-18 freshman campaign to state runner-up her senior season.

After spending last season as one of Kevin Gertz’s assistant coaches on the LHS staff, she will now be taking her basketball talents to Division II Concord University to play for Coach Kenny Osborne.

“After the state title game in 2013 I think emotionally Hannah was drained and needed time to herself, which she hadn’t seen because of ball,” said Mike Tothe, her dad. “Hannah put a lot of time in her game trying to get the point in which she was at as a senior.”

During the 2013-14, season Hannah Tothe was asked to be an assistant at Logan. She took the required certification to legally become a coach in the WVSSAC and assisted Coach Gertz and the Lady Cats.

During that year a fire rekindled and Tothe had a desire to play again.

“She began working out on her own unknown to me and I will never forget my birthday,” Mike Tothe said. “Hannah gave me a card that told me of her desire to play again and what she had been doing and asked me to come to the gym with her later that evening. We went to the gym and I watched her shoot like she had been going non-stop since her senior year. Shot after shot went down and her stroke was as pretty as ever. There I stood a proud father in awe and seeing her do this for herself.”

Tothe is remembered most for making the game-winning 3-pointer in Logan’s 52-49 upset win over Spring Valley in the Class AAA state semifinals at the Charleston Civic Center.

The win launched Logan into the state finals where Logan fell to Parkersburg South before a statewide TV audience on Network West Virginia.

It was the first time a high school girls’ basketball team from Logan County had made it to a state championship game.

Concord lost several players from last year’s team due to graduation, grades and dismissals. Tothe will be going in as a freshman with one year of classes under her belt from SWVCTC.

According to Concord Coach Osborne, she has the chance to see some minutes as the best players play.

Tothe has evolved from a little girl that started a need for a girls’ basketball league in Logan to a soon-to-be college basketball player at a state college.
