Logan Co. hospitality

Editor,

The West Virginia Supreme Court assigned me to Logan County to assist pending the appointment of Judge Roger Perry’s successor. W. Douglas Witten received the appointment, and took his oath of office July 31. I know he will do a good job, and I wish him well.

I haven’t been to Logan since 1961, my senior year at Huntington High School. My reception this time has been much better than then. We came to play Logan High School in basketball. You are not called “Wildcats” for no reason.

This trip — completely different! What a pleasant time I have had!

Everyone has been wonderful. The staff at Chief Logan Lodge; members and merchants of the community with whom I have had contact; Logan County Courthouse employees and office holders; the local Bar with its collectively high quality of legal expertise and high level of civility. What fine people!

I further thank Bonnie D. Kovack, secretary; Karen A. Medley, court reporter; Josh Butcher, law clerk; Tom Fink, bailiff, and Vickie Kolota, Circuit Clerk, and her office.

Deputy Clerk Helen Midkiff has been supportive beyond description. She is a remarkable person. Judge Eric O’Briant has gone out of his way to work with me, and make Logan feel like home.

Oh, yes… HHS beat Logan by one point here and by five in the Regional. We went on to win the State Championship. It was Willie Akers’ first year as Logan’s coach.

The highlight of my stay? Being able to visit with Coach/Commissioner Akers in person, and to have him sign my 1961 W.Va. Basketball program!

A 72-year-old man does not have many heroes. Willie Akers has been, and shall continue to be one to me.

Thanks for the genuine Logan County hospitality,

David M. Pancake
