CHAPMANVILLE — The offensive woes continued for the Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team on Friday night against Poca.

The Tigers couldn’t break 30 points and lost a Cardinal Conference squeaker to the Dots, 32-29, at the CRHS gym.

Chapmanville, which is averaging just 41.3 points per game this season, dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the league. Poca improved to 5-1, 1-1.

The Tigers have now dropped three straight games. The Dots’ only setback this season was a 53-39 loss to Tolsia in conference action.

The game pitted two name-sake coaching legends — Chapmanville first-year mentor Allan Hatcher and Poca veteran coach Allen Osborne. Both have won more than 700 games in their respective coaching careers. Hatcher has a West Virginia State Championship under his belt when he coached at Williamson and has led several teams to the state tourney in Kentucky.

Chapmanville was led on Friday night by 6-foot-4 senior Mackenzie Martin, who poured in 19 of the Tigers’ 29 total points.

Martin scored Chapmanville’s only three points of the fourth quarter — a 3-ball — which put the Tigers on top 29-26 with 3:30 left in the game.

Poca then tied it at 29 as sophomore Noah Frampton answered with a 3-pointer of his own.

The Dots then went ahead for good, 30-29, as Adam Sigman split from the free throw line with 2:10 left.

Cameron Cottrill then put Poca ahead by three at 32-29 after netting a pair of foul shots.

Chapmanville had one last shot at sending the game into overtime but missed a 3-point attempt with three seconds left.

Kenny Plumley and Brady Cox tallied four points each for the Tigers. Cox gave the Tigers a boost in the third period with a pair of hoops inside the lane. Mike Hurst chipped in with two points.

Frampton paced the Dots with a 12-point effort. Cottrill finished with 11 points and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Chapmanville was 12-for-30 for 40 percent from the field. Poca was 12-for-39 for 31 percent. Eight of the Tigers’ field goals were made by Martin, who connected on 8-of-14 of his shots. He was 3-for-5 from 3-point land.

The Tigers led 9-6 after one quarter but was outscored 9-4 in the second as the Dots led 15-13 at the half.

Chapmanville then outpointed Poca 13-8 in the third to take a 26-22 advantage.

Two straight Frampton buckets early in the fourth tied it up at 26.

The Tigers will try to get back into the win column next Friday night, Dec. 28, as CRHS is set to host county rival Man (1-2) at 8:30 p.m. in the second game of Chapmanville’s annual Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament. Pikeview (2-0) plays Mount View (2-0) in Game 1.

It will be the first of three meetings between the Tigers and the Hillbillies this season. Chapmanville travels to Man on Jan. 2 in Round 2. Late in the season, Man makes a return trip to Chapmanville to take on the Tigers.

The tourney consolation and championship games are then slated to be played on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Man enters the tourney with a 1-2 record. The Billies’ home game with Fayetteville on Saturday night was called off due to bad weather and road conditions.

Man lost 70-49 at Mount View on Tuesday.
