CHAPMANVILLE — When a basketball team doesn’t score a single point in the first quarter it’s usually a bad sign.

It surely was a bad omen for Poca on Thursday night as the Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team held the Dots scoreless in the opening quarter and went on to take a 49-24 victory in Cardinal Conference action at the CRHS gym.

The Lady Tigers, 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, led Poca 14-0 after one quarter of play and never looked back.

Katelynn Hall led Chapmanville with 14 points and nine rebounds.

It was a nice comeback by the Lady Tigers, which had suffered their first defeat of the season with the 56-55 buzzer-beating heartbreaker at Tolsia on Tuesday evening.

Hannah Bailey had nine points to lead the Dots.

Kristin DesRocher netted eight and Jessica Rideout seven for Chapmanville. Hannah Vance had four, while Katelynn Manns, Hailey Price and Kim Lambert all had three points each. Savannah Wiley, Cheyenne Meeks and Autumn Baisden had two each. NeNe Osborne chipped in with one point.

The Dots finally scored in the second quarter but were outpointed 9-8 by Chapmanville and trailed 23-9 at the half. Chapmanville’s 17-8 third quarter then pushed the lead to 40-17. The Lady Tigers outscored the Dots 9-7 in the fourth.

Poca dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Cardinal after the loss. The Dots are bringing their girls’ basketball program back this season after folding last year after playing only a few games.

The Lady Tigers were scheduled to get back into action on Saturday at Mingo Central. CRHS then plays Nicholas County on Friday, Dec. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.
