LHS Hall of Fame

Editor,

As a member of the graduating class of 1968, I totally endorse the request for Eddie Lee and Arvis Curry to be inducted into the Logan High School Hall of Fame. Paul Miller, former sports reporter/editor for the Logan Banner, totally agrees with this endorsement as well.

Paul and I have spent hours talking about these two football players and as well as the entire team. This team was special and followed by the student body far above any other class and this is mainly due to watching Eddie Lee do those end sweeps and punt returns. Also, watching the one handed gentle giant, Arvis Curry, bring havoc to the opposing line whether it was on offense or defense.

Many of us filled the eight to 10 chartered buses to each away game and filled the stands for home games screaming the “Eddie Lee” chant at the top of our lungs and “defense, defense” at the same scream level as we knew no one was going to run over Arvis Curry.

Surely, with Eddie’s continued play in college at West Virginia State College and now a member of their Hall of Fame, Logan High should also award him with the same honor. Arvis’s football was cut short as Steve said but that takes nothing away from his head and shoulders football playing for Logan High School.

I am not even going to get into Eddie’s success in track but in 1968 Eddie was the fastest person in West Virginia.

Paul Miller and I are recommending that we use this year’s 45 Class Reunion to recognize and induct these two outstanding football players into the Logan High School Hall of Fame.

A budget

Editor,

Senator Manchin says Congress won’t work in a bipartisan manner to replace the sequestration. Then why does Manchin not cooperate with Senate Republicans and Republican Congressmen?

Representative Rahall says the sequestration will cause severe disruption to all government services. Then why has Rahall never passed a budget under the current administration?

Senator Rockefeller says the sequestration is a “sloppy, across-the-board spending cut.” Then why has Manchin, Rahall and Rockefeller, all of them, never passed a budget?

A budget gets a handle on government spending and delegates a certain amount of funds for all government agencies. Just think — a budget would take control of America’s incredible spending problem and give all government department’s intelligent spending choices. With a budget, which Manchin, Rahall and Rockefeller refuse to pass and implement, there would never be a sequestration in the first place.

Thank you

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your lovely article of my aunt Dollie Jarrell’s passing and, I believe, her son James Phillips as well.

It’s been a sad year. God bless you.

Sincerely,

Papal election

Editor,

As I ponder the recent papal election, I asked ‘why so much hoopla’ over a human being?

From what I’ve read in the Bible, we were not to call any man ‘Father,’ much less ‘Holy Father.’ I would be fearful to call the pope ‘the head of the church.’ Only Jesus holds that position. In the Psalms it says “Holy and Reverend” is my name. Yet we address human beings with these titles everyday.

Also, I am curious as to how the new pontiff will figure into the end of time of this age — along with Obama, the European Union, etc. That is, if indeed, we are in the last days. Can this world get worse? Yes, and it will before Jesus returns.

I admit that I know little about these symbols in the Book of Revelations. I have read it though. Once I heard a Bible scholar say that when the events of Revelation occur, what you have read will be revealed. Then you will understand. But if you haven’t read, as most haven’t, you are ‘ripe’ for deception and will fall for anything and anyone.

We don’t have to be blind unless we choose to be. Pray for open eyes and heart. Read and study God’s Word for yourself. God will help those who sincerely seek truth.

Sincerely,

Sharon Ellis

Gasoline outlets

Editor,

This is for the gasoline outlets in Logan.

Thank you for making us number one in highest gas prices.

I have seen prices 25¢ per gallon cheaper in our state. Some are farther from refinery stations than us.

Sock it to us. Keep up the good work.
