BUFFALO -- It took three extra days but the Man High School football team did it.
The Hillbillies finally got a win at Buffalo on Monday night as Class A No. 1-ranked Man blasted the Bison 42-12 at the Buffalo High School football field.
The game was originally scheduled to be played last Friday at Buffalo but due to a mix-up no officials showed up to the game, prompting the rescheduling of the contest for last night.
Many Man fans were furious about the referee fiasco as they had driven 100 miles to the game on Friday and had to turn around and trek back to Putnam County on Monday night.
But at least they got to see the Billies win another game.
With the victory, Man improved to 8-1 on the season and will close out the regular season this Saturday night at home against Matewan in the renewal of the Single-A rivalry between the Billies and the Tigers.
Man is looking to secure the No. 1 seed and home field advantage for the playoffs which begin Nov. 13 across the state.
Buffalo, which is having a down year, dropped to 3-6 with Monday's loss.
The Billies had no trouble with the Bison in last night's contest. Man rushed for more than 400 yards and had nearly 500 yards of total offense for the game.
Running backs Michael Lomax and Brandon Plymale led Man to victory. Lomax scored two touchdowns and carried the ball 12 times for 161 yards. Plymale added 137 on 11 attempts and also had two touchdowns.
The Billies led 28-0 at the half and then coasted in the second half.
The only black mark against Man was the 16 penalties for 115 yards which were flagged against the Billies.
Man coach Harvey Arms was glad to get the win.
“Our offense played well with over 400 yards rushing,” he said. “Our defense also played well but those two big passes from Buffalo hurt us. We had too many penalties. We had more than 100 yards of penalties and that's way too many.”
Man scored touchdowns on each of its first four possessions.
The Billies took their opening drive 61 yards in nine plays, culminating on Plymale's 1-yard touchdown run. Plymale was playing for the first time in three weeks. He missed last week's game with Wyoming East due to illness. Two weeks ago, he sat out with a banged up knee. Derrick Earnest's PAT attempt was blocked but Man led 6-0 with 6:56 to go in the first quarter.
Buffalo was forced to punt and Man wasted no time on its next possession. On the third play of the drive, Lomax scored on a 1-yard TD run. The score was set up by a 54-yard run by Plymale on the first play. Quarterback Ryan Crum ran in the two-point conversion and the Billies were on top 14-0 with 2:07 showing on the first quarter clock.
Man made it 21-0 with 8:26 remaining until the half as Plymale scored on a 27-yard TD run and Earnest was good on the extra point kick.
The Bison drove to near midfield but fumbled the ball away at the Man 46-yard line. Corey Earnest fell on the ball for Man.
Nine plays later, Crum hit Earnest on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds left until the half. Earnest's PAT was good and Man led 28-0 at the intermission.
Man kept the blowout going early in the third quarter as the Billies scored a touchdown on their first drive of the half.
Andrew Hale reached pay dirt on a 2-yard TD run with 9:17 to go in the third quarter. Earnest's PAT was good and the Billies led the Bison 35-0.
Buffalo then made a game of it as Levi Jordan fired a 3-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Jones with 3:10 left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 35-6.
The Bison then got a break after a 6-yard punt by the Billies gave Buffalo a first-and-10 at the MHS 29-yard line.
Seven plays later, Jordan connected with Jones on a fourth-and-goal play for a 6-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed as Man held onto a 35-12 lead.
Man then punched in one more touchdown before bringing in the reserves. Lomax scored on a 35-yard touchdown run with 7:09 left. Earnest's PAT was good as Man led 42-12.
Buffalo was forced to punt on its next drive and Man got the ball and ran out the clock with its second-string offense on the field.
Man is looking to wrap up home field advantage for the Class A playoffs. The Billies haven't hosted a home post-season game since 1997.
Six different Man players carried the football in the first half and nine different Billies packed the pigskin for the game.
Hale added eight rushes for 46 yards for Man.
Derek Lomax had seven carries for 44 yards.
Crum had four attempts for 22 yards. He was 2-of-4 passing for 34 yards. Evan Riggins also had a 17-yard catch for the Billies.
On defense, Cody Owens had four solo tackles and one assist. Earnest had four stops and a fumble recovery.
Cory Kinningham had three tackles and one assist.
Zack Underwood had two solos and four assists.
Manny Gibson finished with two solos and two assists. Riggins had two tackles.
Buffalo dressed just 17 players for the game.
