The slide continued for the Logan High School basketball team on Tuesday night at Fairlea, W.Va., as the Class AAA No. 4-ranked Greenbrier East Spartans won 60-53 over the Wildcats at the Greenbrier East High School gym.

Logan fell to 2-6 on the season and lost its third straight game and fifth out of its last six contests.

Greenbrier East improved to 10-0 on the season with the win and led the Wildcats 40-24 at halftime. The Spartans closed out the first half on a 21-4 run, turning a 20-19 deficit into a 16-point advantage at the intermission.

C.J. Williams led Logan with 12 points.

Chase Preston had nine for the Cats, while Worm Street and A.J. Reynolds each tossed in eight points.

T.J. Tomblin had six, while Z. Minnick had five points.

Zak Miller hit a 3-pointer and finished with three on the night. Benny Adkins chipped in with two points for the Cats.

Logan was just 22-for-61 shooing from the field for 36 percent. LHS was 6-for-22 from 3-point territory. The Wildcats were 3-for-10 from the free throw line for 30 percent.

The Spartans were 16-for-47 from the floor for only 34 percent but were 8-for-21 from 3-point land. East was 20-for-31 from the foul line for 65 percent.

Greenbrier East was led by Rondale Watson’s 19 points. Bryce Woodliff had 14 and Owen Browning 10 to round out the Spartans’ double figure scorers.

The Wildcats looked to make a game of it early in the third quarter with a 6-0 run — capped off by Preston’s 3-pointer — to close to within 40-30.

Browning, however, answered with his own 3 to make it 43-30.

The Spartans later made it 49-34 with Watson’s 15-foot jumper.

Logan came back with Miller’s 3 to slice the deficit to 49-39 in the third.

Greenbrier East added one more bucket to lead 51-39 after three quarters of play.

The Cats inched closer in the fourth but could not really get into striking distance. Logan would outscore the Spartans 14-9 in the fourth.

Logan is scheduled to return to action on Friday night at home against Class AA Westside. Tip time is 7:30 p.m. at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.

The Wildcats have a rematch with Greenbrier East on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. on the second night of Logan’s annual King Coal Classic tourney. On the first night on Jan. 25, the Cats host Belfry (Ky.), also at 8 p.m.
