MALDEN, W.Va. (AP) — State authorities have identified a miner who died following an accident at a Kanawha County coal operation.

Thirty-four-year-old Brandon E. Townsend of Delbarton died Wednesday after a hydraulic jack exploded on a belt press at Midland Trail Energy’s Blue Creek preparation plant. Another worker was injured.

Department of Commerce spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said Thursday that the accident remains under investigation.

Midland Trail is owned by Patriot Coal.
