W.Va. offers retraining grants to laid-off miners

WorkForce West Virginia is encouraging coal miners who were laid off after March 1 to take advantage of new training opportunities.

Miners who received a federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, may be eligible to benefit from a national emergency grant to the state.

Miners and family members can train for in-demand jobs outside the coal mining industry, and get help with the training costs.

Eligible participants can get as much as $5,000 for classroom education.

Informational sessions are set for:

— 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in Logan;

—2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bridgemont Community and Technical College in Montgomery;

—and 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at New River Community and Technical College in Ghent.
