After a rough start to the season the Logan High School boys’ basketball team is showing signs of life.

The Wildcats won their second straight game with Saturday night’s 47-40 win over Class AAA regional foe Point Pleasant on the road.

Logan improved to 4-6 on the season with the victory. The Wildcats were a 66-55 winner last Friday night at home over Westside.

Seniors C.J. Williams and A.J. Reynolds led the Cats to the win at Point Pleasant as the duo tossed in 13 and 11 points respectively.

Point Pleasant, which dropped to 1-8 on the season, got 14 points from Dillon McCarty.

Logan trailed 8-7 after one quarter but took a narrow 17-16 halftime edge. An 18-13 third by the Wildcats pushed the lead to 35-29. Logan then outscored Point Pleasant 12-11 in the fourth to get the win.

Trent Dalton and Brynden “Worm” Street added six points apiece for Logan, while Chase Preston had five and Z. Minnick four. T.J. Tomblin had two points.

Logan will look to make it three in a row on Tuesday night as the Cats travel to Hamlin to take on the Lincoln County Panthers.

Lincoln County comes into the game with a 6-5 record. The Panthers were demolished 68-36 last week at Chapmanville.

The Wildcats then host Class A Tug Valley on Jan. 22 at Willie Akers Arena before taking on Belfry, Ky., on Jan. 25 on the first night of Logan’s King Coal Classic. The next night on Jan. 26, Logan hosts Greenbrier East in the King Coal Classic finale.

Logan then has a rematch with Lincoln County on Feb. 5 at home before playing Point Pleasant again at home on Feb. 8.

Chapmanville 58,

Sissonville 46

The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team ran its record to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Cardinal Conference with Saturday night’s 58-46 win at Sissonville.

The Tigers, winners of two straight games, was led by senior point guard Mike Hurst, who netted 14 of his 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter. He was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

Kenny Plumley led Chapmanville in scoring with a 20-point effort. Mackenzie Martin also reached double digits with 15 points. Jon Williamson added four and Trey Dalton three.

Zach Null led the Indians (4-7) with 20 points. Anthony Bess tallied 13.

The Tigers led 5-4 after one quarter, 19-11 at the half and 32-28 after three. CRHS then outscored Sissonville 26-18 in the fourth to notch the victory.

Chapmanville, coached by first-year mentor Allan Hatcher, is scheduled to return to the hardwood on Friday night at Wayne, the last-place team in the Cardinal Conference. The Tigers then host Nicholas County on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m., before going to Herbert Hoover on Jan. 22, to Tolsia on Jan. 25 and then to Nicholas County on Jan. 29.

GIRLS

Winfield 57,

Logan 55

Winfield edged the Logan High School girls’ basketball team on Saturday night with a 57-55 win at the Winfield High School gym.

Morgan Eggleton led the Generals (7-4) with 22 points, while Martha Rhoades netted 11.

Monica Mitchell led Logan (6-3) with 18 points. The Lady Cats also got 13 points each from Summer Collins and Hannah Tothe. Shayna Gore had eight points and Hannah Adkins three.

Logan led 14-10 after one quarter but was outscored 21-9 in the second as Winfield took a 31-23 halftime lead. Both teams tallied 15 points in the third as the Generals maintained a lead at 46-38. Winfield then held on to get the win.

The Lady Cats were scheduled to return to action on Monday night at Tolsia. Logan then hosts Lincoln County on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena. Then on Jan. 25, the Lady Cats host Greenbrier East at 6 p.m. as part of Logan’s King Coal Classic. The Logan boys follow with a game against Belfry, Ky.

Sissonville 47,

Chapmanville 32

The tailspin continued for the Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team, which fell 47-32 at Sissonville on Saturday night in Cardinal Conference action.

The Lady Tigers dropped their third straight game and fifth in their last six contests. Chapmanville now stands at 5-6 overall and 4-5 in the league. The Lady Tigers had lost a 45-42 heartbreaker at home last Thursday in a game in which Chapmanville blew a 13-point lead.

Sissonville (9-2), ranked No. 9 in the state in Class AA, outscored Chapmanville 35-17 in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Karli Pinkerton led the Indians with 19 points. Madison Jones added 15.

Kristin DesRocher paced the Lady Tigers with 10 points. Hillary Hainer had eight and Katelynn Hall six, while Autumn Baisden and Katelynn Manns tossed in four points apiece.

CRHS led 9-3 after one quarter, but was outscored 15-6 by Sissonville in the second to fall behind 18-15 at the half. The Indians then outscored Chapmanville 17-7 in the third to expand the lead to 35-22. The Indians then outpointed the Lady Tigers 18-10 in the fourth to set the final score.

Chapmanville was scheduled to return to action on Monday night at Tug Valley.

The Lady Tigers then play at Herbert Hoover on Wednesday in a Cardinal Conference game before hosting Sherman on Jan. 22.

Chapmanville then hosts county rival Logan on Jan. 30 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.
