The Lady Tigers’ Invitational looks to be the best ever as a record 16 teams — including all three county squads — are set to descend on the Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ softball field this week.
The invitational, which will use the high school field and the two middle school diamonds next to Tiger Stadium, will honor area emergency service personnel.
Action is scheduled to begin on Thursday at 4 p.m. as Man takes on Herbert Hoover at the CRHS varsity field. Logan then takes on Sissonville at 5:30 and Man faces Poca at 7:30, also at the high school field.
On Friday at the high school field, host Chapmanville takes on Buffalo at 4 p.m. Pikeview battles with Nicholas County at 5:30 and Poca plays Buffalo at 7:30. Also on Friday at the main Chapmanville Middle School field, Sherman and Lincoln County meet at 4, while Riverside takes on Ritchie County at 5:30 and Scott squares off with Nicholas County at 7:30.
On the CMS B field on Friday, Logan plays Point Pleasant at 4, Sherman takes on Wyoming East at 5:30 and Logan battles with Ritchie County at 7:30.
Then on Saturday at the CRHS field, Herbert Hoover is set to face Buffalo at 10:30 a.m. and Chapmanville follows with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Ritchie County. At 2:30 p.m., Hoover and Wyoming East are set to play with Chapmanville and Pikeview taking on each other at 4:30. Riverside and Scott are set to play at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday at the CMS field, Point Pleasant plays Lincoln County at 10:30 a.m. Sissonville and Nicholas County battle each other at 12:30, Scott and Lincoln County face off at 2:30 and Sissonville and Wyoming East battle each other at 4:30 p.m.
At the CMS B field on Saturday, two games are scheduled as Pikeview plays the Poca Dots at 12:30 and Man takes on Point Pleasant at 2:30.
Host Chapmanville, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AA, was 7-2 to start off the week. Class A Man has a 1-1 mark while 3A Logan is 6-2 after splitting a pair of games over the weekend.
Lady Tigers’ coach Ronnie Ooten said he’s looking forward to the tournament.
“It should be good,” Ooten said. “It’s a round-robin format and it will allow everyone to get three games in against teams they might not ordinarily play. My God, we’ve got some good teams. It’s going to be something different to use all three fields. Ritchie County is coming and they are good. So is Lincoln County, Nicholas County, Buffalo and Logan. If you want to watch some good softball this weekend is the time to do it. We’re going to honor the first responders — the area police departments and fire departments. They’ve done a great job with this.”
