Chapmanville’s Josh Zigmond looked like Justin Verlander on the mound in last Saturday’s 11-12-year-old District 2 Little League Baseball tourney opener.
Zigmond fired a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and no walks as he led the Chapmanville All-Stars to a 4-0 win over county rival Man in the District 2 opener at the Pineville Little League field.
Zigmond had a perfect game alive in the fifth inning as he retired the first 14 batters he faced.
Man’s Branden Nelson then broke up the perfect game as he struck out but reached first base as the Chapmanville catcher was unable to handle the third strike. Nelson then went to second on a Chapmanville error but was stranded there as Zigmond fanned Ritchie Caserta to end the threat.
Then in the sixth, Zigmond finished off the win and the no-hitter as he struck out the side to end the game.
Chapmanville went ahead 1-0 in the second inning as Timmy Bigley walked, Austin Bledsoe singled and Adam Vance singled to load up the bases. Bigley then scored on a Man error.
Chapmanville then plated three runs in the fourth to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Bledsoe led off with a double and scored on Vance’s RBI single as Chapmanville led 2-0. Hensley then ripped an RBI single to up the margin to 3-0. Then it was an RBI single off the bat of Noah Dingess to push the lead to 4-0.
With Zigmond on the mound the four runs stood easily as Chapmanville improved to 1-0 in the district tourney.
Dingess was 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate for Chapmanville. Bledsoe, Chapmanville’s third baseman, was 2-for-3 with a double and a single. First baseman Vance was 2-for-3 with two singles and two runs scored.
Mullins and Evan Willis added singles for Chapmanville.
John McCoy was the starter on the hill and the pitcher of record for the Man All-Stars.
Man and Chapmanville are the only two Logan County teams in the 11-12 tourney. Only five teams are in the tourney as Pineville, Mullens and Welch round out the field.
The top two teams advance to the upcoming state tournament at Martinsburg. Chapmanville and Man advanced to state last year.
