WILLIAMSON — The Coalfield Community Action Partnership, or Coalfield CAP, is moving into a new location in order to better serve the needs of the community. The new location, a former showroom and garage of Moore’s Autogroup in West Williamson, will provide headquarters for programs that service seven West Virginia counties and two Kentucky counties. The Coalfield CAP weatherization program also encompasses Boone and Clay counties and is the second largest in the state.

Bill Harmon is a superintendent with MCP Enterprises, the company renovating the buildings for Coalfield CAP.

The buildings are approximately 3,500 and 5,000 square feet, Harmon said.

“We are building 37 offices,” he explained. “Along with bathrooms, kitchens, and a big 35 by 50 foot training room. The training room will have computer stations as well as a big screen that will come down out of the ceiling that will be used for training videos and things like that.”

Although MCP usually does mine site construction, Harmon said the crew was not outside their comfort zone working on the new CAP offices.

“We have 14 people working here; we have done everything, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, heating and cooling system — even the drywall.”

But Harmon said the most interesting part of the project was the demolition before construction.

“We had to gut the buildings,” he said. “So we used a bobcat (a small endloader-type of equipment) and just knocked down walls. That was fun!”

MCP Enterprises, the company renovating the buildings for Coalfield CAP, was born five years ago in Shady Springs, about the time the 2007-2009 recession was just beginning. Even though the unemployment rate was on the rise and the birth of new businesses fell, MCP Enterprises flourished.

In the beginning, MCP performed maintenance work for coal mines and the coal industry. They cleaned and repaired preparation plants, large heavy equipment and loading facilities.

“MCP Enterprises began with me and a telephone,” said MCP founder Jamie Humphrey.

Humphrey rented equipment needed for a job and employed expert help. Eventually the company was able to purchase equipment and continued to expand.

It evolved into a full service construction firm, building structures such as control rooms, warehouses and industrial buildings and known throughout the industry as a firm which delivered the project on time, on budget and with top quality.

MCP continues to work on coalfield projects and with major coal producers such as Arch Coal, Alpha Natural Resources and United Coal. A major employer, MCP maintains a staff of skilled workers including concrete specialists, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, equipment operators and other specialists. They are equipped with the best equipment and are required to pass drug tests and are MSHA and OSHA trained in best practices and safety.

In addition to industrial clients and the Coalfield CAP, MCP has completed projects for the Putnam Public Service District, the West Virginia State Police and many others.

MCP Enterprises announced recently that they will now provide residential and commercial steam cleaning services to the general public and storm services to residential, commercial, utility and industrial firms.

This latest service offering is a natural progression from the exacting and demanding work required at coal facilities. It also permits MCP to utilize the sense of urgency that is required for coalfield work which must be completed during downtimes so as to not interfere with production. This same sense of urgency carries forward to jobs undertaken for residential, commercial and industrial steam cleaning projects as well as storm repair services.

Humphrey said their steam cleaning operation is quite unique.

“I combined a bucket truck with a steam cleaner,” said Humphrey. “I have a patent pending on it.”

Using bucket trucks 50 feet in the air, MCP crews are able to provide close contact cleaning of residential and commercial siding and gutters on existing houses and apartment buildings. The hot steam and close proximity provide an excellent cleaning of those surfaces without the risk of damage. Also, there is no comparison between MCP’s method and the standard method of one guy on the ground shooting a stream of pressurized water 50 feet in the air.

Their storm services include roof and siding repairs, tree removal and other tasks related to recovery from storm events. MCP employs tree clearing crews and uses wood chippers, bucket trucks and other equipment to reduce the costs associated with such events.

“Using our wood chippers, we can remove a fallen tree,” said Humphrey.

Humphrey personally supervises the inception of each job, no matter the size or scope. Humphrey’s commitment to quality and excellence is a 24 hour a day task.
