Logan Delegate Rupert “Rupie” Phillips attended Wednesday’s RESA II meeting at the Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center on Three Mile Curve and heard a progress report on Man Middle School. More than 25 educators, administrators and county school board members attended Wednesday’s Regional Education Service Agency II meeting at the Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center on Three Mile Curve and heard a progress report on Man Middle School.
Representatives from the Logan, Mingo, Lincoln, Cabell, Wayne and Mason County school systems attended the meeting, as well as Brian Kirkendoll, who represents State Treasurer John Perdue, and Logan Delegate Rupert “Rupie” Phillips.
The group was given a video presentation by RESA II Technology Director Lisa Teeters on the improvements made at Man Middle School, which had been struggling with falling test scores.
“You can walk the halls and tell a difference,” Teeters said.
RESA II Executive Director Dee Cockrille said everyone made changes from the administration to the students in order to bring test scores up.
“This school took responsibility and the students took responsibility,” Cockrille said. “They made student achievement a top priority. We are working on culture and your schools are taking it seriously.”
Logan County Schools Superintendent Wilma Zigmond thanked the RESA II members for their work in the county’s schools to help bring test scores up.
“They went into the schools and talked about what was really wrong,” Zigmond said. “It’s so much nicer to go there now.”
Delegate Phillips said he wanted to stay and learn more about the changes made at Man Middle School.
“I want to learn what everything is about and get caught up,” Phillips said.
Cockrille also addressed social networking policies that are being developed and said she and her staff will be taking input from the council members to develop a policy for the RESA II group.
The group heard reports from each county and from representatives from Marshall University about professional development in schools and from representatives of FullCircle, which is a state retirement program.
The next meeting of the RESA II council will be held on June 19 in Cabell County.
