The Logan County Magistrate’s Office has seen a large amount of domestic violence charges during this last week of June. It was reported Monday that domestic battery charges were filed against W.Va. Delegate Rupert Phillips and now a local journalist and former House of Delegate candidate has been charged with domestic assault and battery.
Christopher Leon Stratton, 40, of Stollings, was arrested for domestic assault x2, domestic battery x2 and brandishing on Monday, June 25.
According to a criminal complaint filed by W.Va. Senior Trooper B.K. Wellman, “the accused, Christopher Stratton, did verbally threaten to kill his mother, the victim, Dreama Stratton. The accused then retrieved a knife from the kitchen and went after the victim threatening to “cut her head off.” During the dispute, the accused also choked the victim and punched his sister, Candace Stratton, in the face.”
Wellman stated that he “observed redness to his mother’s neck and to his sister’s face.” The complaint states that Wellman allegedly recovered “the knife, which was a kitchen knife approximately 12 inches long.”
Stratton is freelance journalist and a former staff writer for The Logan Banner. He was also a candidate on the Democratic ticket for the House of Delegate nomination in the May 2012 Primary Election.
• Brian Lee Scarberry, 28, of Chapmanville, was charged with domestic battery on June 18 by Chapmanville Police Department CPL D.S. Miller.
According to the complaint, Miller was dispatched to Garrett Avenue in Chapmanville to a physical domestic assault that had occurred. Upon arrival and investigation, Miller “noticed red marks on the back of the victim (Elizabeth Dawn Bryant) which she got from the defendant who is her boyfriend.” The complaint alleges that Conley “struck the victim with a umbrella.” The report states that “a firefighter who was at the Chapmanville Fire Department notices/saw the victim getting struck by the defendant and called 9-1-1 to report the domestic.”
• Kevin Whitt, 40, of Chapmanville, was charged with domestic assault and domestic battery on Monday, June 25, by W.Va. State Trooper R.L. Glaspell. The criminal complaint states that Glaspell “responded to a domestic violence call through Logan County 9-1-1 in the Marshfork area.”
When Glaspell arrived on scene, he spoke to the victim, Amber Peluso, who “advised that she was in an argument over her taking the child with her ex-husband, the defendant.” Peluso advised the officer that “he grabbed her from behind and stated (sic) choking her and grabbing her face.” Glaspell notes in the complaint that he “did notice scratch marks on the victims face and neck and redness in the area.”
• Jamie Nelson, 26, of Stollings, was charged with domestic assault, domestic battery and simple possession x3 by W.Va. State Trooper J.G. Honaker on June 23. The complaint states that Honaker responded to a domestic situation at Peach Creek. Upon arrival, Honaker was “advised by the victim, Brenda Nelson, that the defendant was asked to leave the victims residence and did not leave, the victim advised that the defendant grabbed her and through (sic) her and hit her in the body.”
Honaker performed a safety search of the defendant and located “one clear plastic baggy with marijuana in it and a pill bottle that had two Xanax and one Clonazepam in the defendants purse.” Honaker said he was advised “that the drugs were hers and she did hit the victim.”
• Freddie Abbott, 24, of Chapmanville, was charged with domestic battery, domestic assault and obstructing by W.Va. State Trooper R.E. Stowers and Senior Trooper T.D. Boggs on June 22. According to the complaint, the officers responded to a complaint in the community of Smoke House. Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the victim, Amanda Vest, who advised “that the defendant, Freddie Abbott, came up behind her and threw her to the ground while she was attempting to leave the residence.”
The officers made contact with Whitt who advised that “he was just arguing with his girlfriend in the driveway.” Officers observed “red marks and swelling on the defendants face.” Whitt, in a hand written statement, “admitted he grabbed his girlfriend from behind and fell onto the ground when he tried to stop her from leaving.” When officers placed Whitt into custody, he would not “place his hands behind his back after multiple verbal commands to do so.”
• Amanda Vest, 20, of Accoville, was charged with domestic battery, domestic assault, obstructing and no operators on June 22 by WVSP Trooper R.E. Stowers and Senior Trooper T.D. Boggs. The officers responded to a domestic complaint in the community of Trace Fork where, upon arrival, they were met by the defendant who was driving a white 2005 Chevy Malibu on Smokehouse Road. Officers ran a license check through the WVSP communications and were advised that Vest had no West Virginia license. Vest advised the officers that “she and her boyfriend, the victim, Freddie Abbott, had gotten into an argument.”
The officers traveled to Whitt’s residence where he advised that “when they fell to the ground, she kicked him while threatening him with physical harm.” Officers gave Vest to “exit the vehicle” several times and she refused until finally she exited the vehicle.
• Katherine Nichole Scarberry, 18, of Chapmanville, was charged by WVSP Senior Trooper T.D. Boggs and Trooper R.E. Stowers on June 24 for child abuse causing bodily injury and child neglect causing bodily injury.
The officers, assisted by Child Protective Services (CPS), responded to a child abuse complaint at the McCoy Rentals. Upon arrival, officers observed “the victim, who is five-months-old to have deep black bruises on his left eye and bruises on top of his forehead.” The defendant alleged that “the bruises come from the victim crawling around the residence.” The officers, with assistance from CPS, determined that “the victim was unable to crawl at this time.” Photos were taken of the victim’s injuries regarding this incident.
