MUD FORK — A portion of the Rt. 73 access ramp to Corridor G was closed Wednesday night when the pavement collapsed beneath a coal truck. The Department of Highways closed the north lanes of the ramp from the red lights at the intersection of Rt. 44 to the red lights at the Mud Fork exit. DOH crews were on site Wednesday repairing the damage.

“There was a 24 inch drain pipe that had a joint separate,” said Steve Runyon, Department of Transportation bridge engineer. “Over time it has washed away the fine stuff underneath the black top and that’s what made the black top fail.”

Runyon said crews were in the process of repairing the damage and the road will remained closed until work is completed.

“Depending on the weather, and if all goes well, it will be late Friday — possibly into Saturday — before work is completed,” said Runyon.

Runyon said other drain pipes along the ramp have already been inspected for any damage.
