The Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation Inc. (LCCEF) participated in Logan County high school Awards Ceremonies, presenting a total of 20 new scholarships — five valedictorian awards and renewed 12 scholarships. These scholarships have a value of $65,000 for 2012-2013 college expenses.
Jean Ray, president of the LCCEF, announced two new scholarships: The Albert Jr. and Bess E. Klele Scholarship first for Virginia Tech and second for Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College (SWVCTC) and The Walter Vance Pharmacy Scholarship for any college in West Virginia.
The Klele scholarship was established by Mrs. Klele to honor the memory of her husband Albert who died in 1997. Albert was a lifelong resident and businessman in Logan. Albert and Bess Klele were the owners of Plaza Lanes and enjoyed 48 years of marriage. Albert enrolled at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., where those days were interrupted by World War II. Mrs. Klele wanted to give back to the community that she and her husband loved and were able to make their livelihood in business in Logan. While they were in business they supported community activities — especially educational opportunities. By establishing this scholarship, Mrs. Klele has made it possible for their interest in students to continue forever.
The first Klele Scholarship went to Katelyn Lee, the daughter of Brian and Amber Lee. Katelyn plans to attend SWVCTC.
The Walter Vance Pharmacy Scholarship to support student interested in Pharmacy was established by Lynn Vance to honor the memory of her husband, Walter, who in 1975 became the first pharmacist of the newly established Aracoma Drug Store in Chapmanville where he was still serving the people at the time of his death November 25, 2011. Walter graduated from Logan High School in 1968, placing third in his class of 548 students. During his holidays and summer vacations from school while he was a student at Concord College at Athens, he worked part-time at Aracoma Drug in Logan.
After receiving his BS degree from Concord in 1972, Walter enrolled in the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy where he was awarded a BS in Pharmacy in 1975. As a pharmacist and co-owner of Aracoma Drug in Chapmanville, he was a friend to all his customers and his employees were considered family.
Walter, the son of Bill and Beulah Vance, was a lifelong member of Monahill Freewill Baptist Church where he served faithfully as Deacon and Bible teacher; he was a part of the Christian Way Singers, a family gospel group. Walter was also a charter member and first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Chapmanville, the first bank to open in Chapmanville, now the Chapmanville Bank of LB&T.
Over the years, Walter continued the tradition of employing pharmacy students at his store. His caring compassionate ways of giving to others will be carried forward with this scholarship started by his wife.
The first Walter Vance Pharmacy Scholarship recipient, Adam Mareske, is the son of Mark and Leigh Mareske. Adam plans to start his studies at SWVCTC.
The Wagner Scholarship, started by Wally and Nancy Wagner, gave two scholarships this year. At Logan High School, the Wagner Scholarship was awarded to Tyler Howerton who plans to attend SWVCTC where he already has 30 hours of credit. Tyler is the son of John and Carol Howerton. At Chapmanville Regional High School, Seth Jordan Deskins, the son of David “Sipe” and Cheryl Deskins, received the Wagner Scholarship and plans to attend University of Charleston.
This was the 12th year the Srichai Scholarship, established by Dr. Prakob and Marasri Srichai for students at Man High School, was awarded. Erin Elizabeth Burgess, the daughter of Gilman and Terri Burgess, and Jessica Gambill, the daughter of Grant and Barbara Gambill, were the recipients. Both Erin and Jessica plan to attend Marshall University.
Also, at Man High School the Charles R. and Myrtle H. McCane Memorial Scholarship established to honor Valedictorians was awarded to the five Valedictorians: Erin Elizabeth Burgess, Katherine Collins, Stephen Caleb Davis, Summer Kennedy and Jacob Riggins.
The Wilson Arthur and Stella Elizabeth Ray Memorial Scholarship designed to encourage those interested in pursuing a degree in music, drama, speech or any of the performing arts was awarded to Curtis Sutphin, the son of William Sutphin and Althea Setliff. Curtis, who is talented in music, plans to attend Glenville State.
Another scholarship presented at CRHS was the Erma Ray Lilly Butcher Scholarship which is also for students interested in a degree in music, drama, speech, or other performing arts and teaching went to Kelli Garrett, the daughter of Debbie Garrett of Chapmanville and the late Kim Garrett. Kelli is enrolled at University of Charleston.
The Sidney W. & Shirley Ferrell Endowment Fund which has been awarding scholarships for 10 years, this year renewed 10 scholarships. At CRHS, the Sidney W. & Shirley Ferrell Scholarship was renewed to Meagan E. Mahaffey, the daughter of Bryan and Dorothy Mahaffey of Chapmanville. Meagan will be in her second year at Marshall University. Brittany Lee Bell, the daughter of Sherry and Ancil Bell Jr. of Chapmanville is a third year student. Elizabeth “Beth” Baldwin, the daughter of Robert and Susan Baldwin of Chapmanville, will be a senior business degree student at West Virginia University. At Logan High School, seven scholarships were renewed. James Kevin Castle II, a second year student at WVU, is the son of James Kevin and Christine Lee Castle; Ashley Curry, the daughter of Del and Anna Mary Curry, will be second year student at SWVCTC; Elysse Burkhamer, the daughter of Mathew and Tessa Burkhamer, will be second year student at Marshall University; Shaun David Wagner, the son of Carolyn and David Wagner of Holden, is a third year student at Marshall University; Jasyn and Justyn Blankenship, the twin sons of Tildon and LaDonna Blankenship of West Logan, are fourth and final year recipients at Marshall University.
The Carl R. Daniel Jr. Scholarship was the first scholarship awarded at Logan High School by the Foundation in 1999 and 14 years later the scholarship established by the Daniel family is still carrying on Mr. Daniel’s legacy of encouraging students to continue their education. The 2012 recipient of the Daniel Scholarship, Matthew Austin Greene, plans to attend West Virginia University and is the son of Jerry and Vicki Greene.
Also at Logan High School, the Lester “Bus” Perry Scholarship was presented to Morgan Aguirre, the daughter of T. Kirk and Angela Aguirre. Morgan plans to attend University of Charleston.
Two Dorsey Lee Spaulding and Spaulding Family Scholarships were renewed to the following students: Ryan Tracy Butcher, son of Tracy and Lynne Butcher, will be a second year student at SSWVCTC. Michael Ellis, son of Scott Ellis and Berneta Kinser of Logan, is also a third year recipient of the Spaulding Scholarship and is attending SWVCTC with plans to later transfer to Marshall University.
Two new Spaulding Scholarships were awarded at Logan High School. They are Zachary Anderson, the son of Bill and Rebecca Anderson.; Zachary will be attending SWVCTC. Nikki Godby, the daughter of the Velma Godby and late John Godby, also will attend SWVCTC. Nikki is proud that she is the first maternal grandchild to attempt finishing college.
Four Weiner Scholarships were awarded: Kacie Harrison, the daughter of Roland Harrison and Vicki McCloud, plans to attend West Virginia University. Justin Ryan Oney, the son of Eric and Kristi Oney, plans to attend West Virginia University Tech campus. Taylor Norman, the daughter of Jerry and Dianna Norman, will attend WVUT and her twin brother, Tyler Norman, will be attending SWVCTC.
Four scholarships were given by Chapmanville High School Classes 1947-56 Reunion Group to Chelsea Allred, the daughter of William and Tammy Allred. Chelsea plans to attend SWVCTC; Jasmine Bailey, the daughter of Barry Bailey, also plans to attend SWVCTC; Connie Beth Nelson, the daughter of Jason and Glenna Moore, will too be attending SWVCTC; Emily Stroud, the daughter of Sidney Stroud and Eva Marcum, will attend Marshall University.
The Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation Inc. was founded by the late Martha Jane Becker. It was Mrs. Becker’s dream to have an organization which would provide a means of meeting current needs and investing in the future of Logan County. That dream continues to unfold with the support of residents of the County and by some who have moved from Logan County with their hearts and interest still here.
Ms. Ray announced that any member of the board of directors would be happy to discuss the establishing of a Fund which would meet the passion of the donor such as a Designated Fund to support a church or organization that a person cares for deeply. A Field of Interest Fund would provide for support of your interest such as art, music, education, religion, which would continue forever. A Donor Advised Fund could provide for unseen needs and interest; plus an Unrestricted Fund would have no restrictions and could meet needs currently unknown.
