Organized competitive shooting is taking off in a big way in Logan County thanks to different matches put on by the Coalfield Shooters Association at their range in Holden.

The club recently had a Father’s Day Trap Shoot and this weekend they will be having a practical pistol action shooting match complete with props.

Club treasurer Jim Morrison said he is looking forward to the next CSA event.

“We are having an action match on Saturday, July 7,” said Morrison. “The scenario is that you are attacked as you pull into the drive way at home. You will fire from inside a car, provided by Mr. Daniel Adkins, at two targets. Then you dismount the vehicle to engage one target in front of the car and perform a mandatory reload before engaging targets at the rear of the car. The total round count is 48, and the match will be composed of three stages (12+12+24=48 rounds).

There is a mandatory safety meeting prior to the match. Each run is $10 for members/non-members. For non-members, there is also a $10 one-day membership for you and your family. Any handgun of any caliber is okay; you may run as many times as you wish.”

Safety is priority one at the CSA events which are held on “cold” ranges which means guns are empty until the competitor approaches the stage.

“Remember that eye and ear protection is a must, and we run a cold range — meaning don’t show up with loaded guns. If you are new at this, don’t worry because our range officer, Roger Ramey, can help you do this safely. We welcome youth and lady shooters, too. You may also want to bring water and shade. If someone lacks some piece of equipment, like a speedloader or a 1911 magazine, give me a holler, and I’ll bring an extra. I may even bring a .22 Ruger Mk II for someone to try out if they want.”

To keep things fair and on a level playing field shooters will be broken up into categories like Single Stack (1911s), Production Service Pistols (like Glocks and X-Ds), Revolver, BUG (back-up guns like 5-shot revolvers and .380s), and rim fire. Top Youth and Ladies shooters will also be recognized.

More details of the match are available at http://www.facebook.com/#!/CoalfieldShooters

The recent Coalfield Shooter’s Association Fathers Day Trapshooting event went rather well, according to organizers.

Morrison told The Logan Banner that a meeting was held prior to the June 17 event and four new members joined the local shooting club.

“The club had 14 people come out to shoot and we shot at least 28 rounds of trap,” Morrison said. “The proverbial good time was had by all, and we thank everyone for coming out. We had some youth shooter come out too, and that is the most important part of the shooting sports.”

Morrison had words of praise for fellow member Adkins of B&B Loans who has been a vital part of the CSA from the very beginning.

“I especially wish to thank Daniel Adkins because we have never had the record keeping be so perfect. He did a great job, which made it easy to figure everything out after the match. Also, I am thankful to Roger Ramey and Keno Muncy for running the mechanical thrower.”
