Pineville tops C-ville for District 2 title

MADISON — The Pineville Little League All-Stars jumped on Chapmanville early, then put the Orange and Black away late as the Wyoming Countians scored a 14-4 win in Wednesday’s District 2 11-12-year-old championship game at Madison.

Both teams advance to the upcoming 11-12 state tournament at Petersburg.

Chapmanville closed out with a 4-2 district record. Chapmanville also lost to Man in the tournament. Man was eliminated with Tuesday night’s semifinal loss to Pineville.

Pineville ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth by scoring six runs to envoke the 10-run mercy rule. Pineville batted around in the fifth inning and won it with Tucker Cook’s walk-off, RBI single.

Pineville scored three runs in the first, three in the second and two more in the third.

Tanner Whitten led Pineville as he was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Luke Laxton was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Blake Currell went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs knocked in.

Ty Dominic added a two-run double for Pineville, which pounded out 10 hits in the win and took advantage of 12 walks and a hit batter issued by Chapmanville’s five pitchers.

Brandon Simpson also had a hit for Pineville. Tommy Davis had one RBI.

Chapmanville was limited to five hits. Trey Pancake had a two-run double, while Evan Plumley had an RBI double. Ethan Stollings also doubled. J.D. Ferrell had an RBI single. Isaac Dixon added a double.

Jacob Riling was the starting and winning pitcher for Pineville. He went four innings and allowed three runs and four hits while striking out five and walking two. Whitten then fired the last inning, fanning one and walking one.

Dixon started for Chapmanville put lasted only 1/3 of an inning. He yielded three runs on one hit and walked four in the bottom of the first inning. Levi Bailey came on in relief and Plumley entered in the third, striking out seven. Hunter Lambert and Braxton Manns pitched for Chapmanville in the fifth.

After taking a 3-0 lead, Pineville made it 6-0 in the second. The big blow was Dominic’s two-run double.

Chapmanville trimmed the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the third. Pancake had a two-run double during the frame.

The lead swelled back to 8-3 in the bottom of the third as Whitten had an RBI single for Pineville.

Ferrell’s RBI single in the top of the fourth cut it to 8-4 and kept Chapmanville in the game.

Pineville then put the game away with a six-spot in the fifth inning.
