Tigers 6th, Wildcats 9th in preseason poll

The Chapmanville Regional and Logan high school boys’ basketball teams both expect to have good seasons.

The state’s media seem to agree as both the Tigers and the Wildcats are ranked in the top 10 in the Class AA preseason basketball poll.

Chapmanville, 17-9 last year and a state tournament team, was ranked sixth in the state, while Logan, a Class AAA team last year, was tied for ninth with Robert C. Byrd.

The Tigers and Wildcats were two of five Cardinal Conference teams to break into the top 10.

Mingo Central, which had a woeful season last year but is expected to be much improved, was ranked fifth in the state in the preseason poll.

The Poca Dots, the defending Cardinal Conference champions, are second. Fairmont Senior is first.

Sissonville, another Cardinal team, was rated seventh. Winfield, Wayne and Herbert Hoover — three more league squads — also received votes.

The only Cardinal Conference teams to get no votes at all were Scott and Nitro, one of the league’s three new members along with Logan and Winfield.

Capital was the preseason No. 1 in Class AAA, while Clarksburg Notre Dame was first in Class A. Tug Valley was seventh in the Class A poll.
