LOGAN, W.Va. — The Logan High School girls’ basketball team put the hammer down on the Herbert Hoover Huskies on Monday night as the Lady Cats rolled to a 39-10 win in the season opener at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.

Logan (1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Cardinal Conference) got 14 points from Britney Welch and held Herbert Hoover scoreless after one quarter as the Lady Cats led 18-0.

Logan expanded the lead to 28-3 at halftime as Hoover wasn’t able to score a single field goal the entire first half.

Herbert Hoover was led scoreless again in the third quarter as well as Logan led 33-3.

The Huskies didn’t score their first bucket until the fourth quarter as Hoover outscored LHS 7-6 in the final stanza.

Allison Dunbar and Taylor Carpenter each scored four points to lead the Huskies (0-2).

Logan also got seven points from Kaileah Williams and six from Jazymne Early. Ally Sipple and Zoe Browning had three each and Alexis Perry, CeCe Knox and Kennedy Hamlet had two each.

The Lady Cats were 11 of 18 from the free throw line. Hoover was only 3 of 10 and tallied just three field goals — all in the fourth quarter. Logan dropped in 14 buckets.

Logan jumped on top 8-0 in the first quarter after a Perry drive to the lane with 4:45 to go. Welch and Sipple each canned a pair of free throws to make it 12-0.

Then with 1:57 remaining, Williams knocked down an 8-foot turnaround shot to increase the Logan lead to 14-0.

A putback by Knox and another Williams hoop made it 18-0 after one quarter.

The lead swelled to 24-0 after a pair of Welch layups and an Early 14-footer.

Herbert Hoover finally scored at the 4:52 mark of the second quarter as Carpenter split from the foul line.

Williams later scored on a putback and Early sank a bucket down low underneath the hoop as Logan led 28-3 at halftime.

The rout was on after that.

The Lady Cats, coached by Kevin Gertz, are slated to return to action on Thursday at Lincoln County in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.

Logan then plays at Mingo Central on Dec. 12 and at Scott on Dec. 15 in a pair of Cardinal Conference contests.
