MAN, W.Va. — The Man High School boys’ basketball team is in rebuilding mode heading into the 2016-17 season.
It will be a tough job for Man first-year head coach TJ Blevins, who took over the reigns from longtime coach Harvey Arms, who stepped down only recently to concentrate on just coaching the Man football team.
Man was scheduled to open the season Dec. 13 on the road at Mount View. The Hillbillies were 15-9 last season but were hit hard by graduation.
To make it even tougher on the Billies this season, Man will also be competing at the Double-A level as well after spending the last 13 years as a Single-A school.
Man’s new Class AA sectional will be stacked with stalwarts and county rivals Logan and Chapmanville Regional as well as an improved Mingo Central team. Scott and Lincoln County round out the six-team sectional.
Blevins is being a realist when asked about this year’s season prospects.
“It’s going to be a tough year,” he said. “We lost all five starters from a year ago and several key returnees decided not to play, so it is really going to be a tough year. We looked real good at practice, but we are so young and we don’t have any size. Plus we have a very tough schedule ahead of us as well.”
Blevins said he hopes to go to a three-guard starting lineup.
“I’m going to have three guards on the floor starting out and we have to run-and-gun and try to use our speed to get up and down the floor,” Blevins said. “We have very little varsity experience. Trey Whitt had some varsity time last year and it was very little. It is very well going to be a rebuilding year.”
Coach Blevins has already picked a starting lineup.
“I have a starting and I’m going to have to use three guards in Trey Whitt, sophomore Zack Cook and junior Michael Sorrell and sophomores Tyler Elkins and Cutler Workman with the other two starters with Quinton Moody, a freshman off the bench as the sixth man,” Blevins said.
Four more players round out Man’s 10-man varsity roster.
“I am going with a 10-man roster,” Blevins said. “The other four varsity players are sophomore Seth Wingler and freshman twins Matt and Andy Spaulding and Nathan Mitchell rounds out the 10 players on the varsity.”
The Hillbillies head into the season with a very inexperienced team.
“We lack experience at this time,” Blevins said. “Like I said earlier we got to get up and down the floor with our speed and our schedule is tough as well. Cameron Simpson would have been a key returnee but decided to concentrate on baseball this coming spring and hopes to play baseball at the college level next year. Nick Collins and John McCoy, who both played last year, decided not to play basketball this year and focus on baseball as well.”
Man’s schedule has been beefed up with home-and-home series against county and sectional rivals Chapmanville Regional and Logan.
Man also has a home-and-home series against Westside and a single game against Cardinal Conference team and preseason top 10 Sissonville.
Logan and Chapmanville were also ranked in the preseason top 10.
The Billies have a late season home-and-home series against Class A power Tug Valley as well.
Blevins is assisted by Bill Lusk and Chris Marcus.
