The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball team traveled to Hamlin last Thursday and suffered their first loss of the season, 27-24.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 10-2 first quarter lead and made it stand.
Hollee Blair led the scoring for CMS with nine points. She was followed by Claire Dingess with five points and Abbie Myers with four.
Jayde Kuenzel, Baylee Belcher and Kaitlyn Moore had two points each for CMS.
“When you have more turnovers than you do shot attempts you won’t win very many games. Hamlin brought the game to us from the start and we simply failed to respond,” Lady Tigers’ coach Tommy Kirk said.
CMS then got back on the winning track Saturday with a 42-20 win over Crum Middle in the Nationwide CMS Girls Showcase.
The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Dingess and Blair with 10 points each. Myers netted eight, while Kuenzel had six and Belcher and Chelsey Fields had four each.
The Tigers got in early foul trouble and held a slim 16-12 lead at the half. CMS then finished with a strong second half to get the win.
“This the third game in a row we have gotten in early foul trouble and had to play most of the first half with starters on the bench,” Coach Kirk said. “We have good backups, but they are guards. We are very small and we basically play four guards when we get in foul trouble.”
CMS was slated to play Lenore Middle School in the Madison Holiday Tournament on Monday at the Madison Civic Center. CMS plays Madison on Wednesday. The CMS boys was also slated to be in action those days.
