Martinsburg ended up winning the 9-10-year-old State Little League baseball title with last Thursday’s 3-2 victory over Huntington in the state championship game at Chapmanville’s Tracy Vickers Field.
Martinsburg advanced to the finals with a 12-1 win over Charleston Central last Wednesday. Huntington was a 12-7 winner over Barboursville in the semifinals.
The tournament was played at three fields due to weather issues — Chapmanville, Logan’s Paul Hale Field and the Madison Little League field.
Martinsburg had advanced in the double-elimination tournament with 5-4 win over St. Albans. Martinsburg previously lost 13-1 to Barboursville and had wins over Summersville (11-1) and Bi-State (1-0).
Huntington had won 14-4 over Fairmont to make it to the Final Four round. Previously, Huntington lost 14-4 to Charleston Central and had scored wins over Tygart Valley (12-1) and Bridgeport (3-2).
Southern West Virginia’s two local representatives — Logan and Madison — were each ousted early on in the tournament.
Logan (0-2) lost 2-0 to Shady Spring in the opener on its own field, then lost 4-3 to Fairmont.
The Madison 9-10 All-Stars (2-2) lost 14-3 to St. Albans but then won 5-2 over Beckley and 14-2 over Summersville before falling 6-5 to St. Albans last Tuesday in the loser’s bracket semifinals.
