The Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team hung with Class AA No. 2-ranked Winfield on Thursday night but ended up falling to the Generals, 60-39, at the Winfield High School gym in Cardinal Conference action.
Chapmanville dropped to 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the conference and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Winfield improved to 17-1, 10-1.
The Lady Tigers led by one at halftime and trailed by just five points at the end of three quarters of play. Winfield then turned it up and ended up walking away with a 21-point win over Chapmanville.
“At the end of the third quarter we were down only points,” CRHS coach Johnny Williamson said. “With five minutes left in the fourth quarter we were down just three. Olivia Dalton fouled out and their press got to us. We lost 60-39 but I am very proud of how far we have came.”
Madison Webb led Chapmanville with 16 points. Kaylee Blair had eight and Graci Brumfield six points. Olivia Dalton had three, while Kara Browning, Shae Pridemore and Taylor Manns all had two points each.
Chapmanville was 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The Generals made 9-of-16 from the foul line.
Zakorrah Russell led Winfield with a game-high 26 points. Freshman Mara McGrew tossed in 14.
McGrew netted four 3-pointers in the win. Webb made the only 3 for the Lady Tigers.
CRHS was scheduled to host Logan on Saturday. The Lady Tigers host Mingo Central on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Chapmanville then closes out the regular season with three games — Feb. 9 at Sherman, Feb. 11 at home vs. Westside and Feb. 14 at home against Wayne.
The Logan High School girls’ basketball team dropped to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in the Cardinal Conference with Thursday night’s 46-42 home loss to Wayne.
Wayne improved to 10-6, 6-3 with the win.
No statistics were reported on the game.
Logan was scheduled to host Chapmanville on Saturday afternoon.
LHS then plays River View on Monday in the Little General Shootout at the Big House at Charleston Civic Center. Tip off is 5:15 p.m.
