Six of the eight Cardinal Conference teams are getting thrown right into the fire.
They go right into the 2015 season with conference games.
Three conference games are on the schedule for Friday night’s season openers as Chapmanville hosts Sissonville, Scott travels to Falling Rock to take on Herbert Hoover and Tolsia heads to Wayne to take on the county rival Pioneers.
Two non-conference games are also on tap on Friday night as Mingo Central hosts Wyoming East and Poca goes to Class AAA Nitro to take on its Putnam County rival.
The Cardinal Conference had another banner year on the gridiron last fall.
Wayne, year in and year out one of the top programs in the state, was the most successful as the Pioneers (10-3 last year) won two Class AA playoff games before falling in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Bridgeport, 48-7.
The Pioneers are led by senior wide receiver Cody Stiltner, a first-team all-state selection from last year. Also back is Logan Queen, a second-team all-state pick on defense.
Mingo Central, now in its fifth season since the consolidation of the old Williamson, Gilbert, Matewan and Burch high schools, broke out of the pack last year with a 10-2 season, eventually losing to Wayne, 35-17 in the quarterfinals after knocking off Sissonville, 35-13, in the opening round.
Scott (7-4) and Sissonville (7-4) also made it to the playoffs last year but dropped opening round games.
Herbert Hoover (6-4) just missed the post-season last year but gave the conference a fifth team with a winning record.
Chapmanville (4-6) and Tolsia (4-6) were in the playoff picture until the very end of the season.
The winless Poca Dots (0-10) were the only team last year which struggled.
