NEWTOWN – Mingo Central started the 2015 season off with a dominating 59-7 win over visiting Wyoming East Friday night at Buck Harless Stadium high atop Miner Mountain.

The weather was perfect on this late summer opening night for high school football with clear skies and temperatures around 70 degreees.

Senior quarterback Stevie Hammond, senior running back Deonte Joplin and senior wide receiver Stephen Whitt all had outstanding offensive performances. The Miners rolled up 440 of total offense and held the Warriors to 125 yards.

Hammond was 8-for-016 passing for 250 yards and five touchdowns. Hammond also rushed for 92 yards on nine carries and a couple of TDs.

Whitt caught three passes for 108 yards and a trio of TDs. Joplin rushed for 62 yards, caught a pass for a TD and ran for a 2-point conversion.

On defense, MCHS was led by Cole Ellis, Thomas Harmon, Caleb Lester, Ethan Collins, Corey Blankenship and Trey Lester.

Mingo Central struck first with 10:42 left in the first quarter as Hammond scampered into the end zone from 21 yards out. He hit Dalton Sheppard for the 2-point conversion to give the home team an 8-0 lead.

In the second quarter the Miners took charge. Hammond hooked up with Joplin on a screen pass for a 16-yard TD. Joplin also scored the conversion to make it 16-0 with 10:28 left in the first half.

Hammond scored his second TD of the night as he broke loose for a 56 yard score. That was the first play of the drive after the Warriors were forced to punt the ball. He connected with Taylor Thornsbury for the conversion to make it 24-0 at the 7:59 mark of the second quarter.

Mingo Central scored again as Hammond squeezed in on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out. He hit big tight end Daniel Buchanan for the conversion to increase the lead to 32-0.

The Miners got one more score before the half when Hammond connected with Whitt for a 22 yard TD. The point after kick was no good due to a bad snap.

Mingo Central went into the dressing room at the half with a comfortable 38-0 lead.

Hammond and Whitt hooked up again for a 32-yard TD strike. Hammond ran in for the conversion to make it 46-0 with 6:07 left in the third quarter.

The Miners’ coaching staff began to sub heavily from that point in the game and coasted the win.

Hammond had one more trick up his sleeve as he hit Tyler Grimmette for a 53-yard touchdown. The point after kick by Jeremy Harrison was no good, but the lead was 52-0 at that point in the third quarter.

The final TD for the Miners came as Hammond hooked up with Whitt again on a bubble screen and he took it to the house from 54 yards out. Harrison’s kick was good to make it 59-0.

Wyoming East got on the scoreboard when Uriah Adkins scored from 3 yards out. The extra point kick was good by James Snuffer.

Adkins led East with 55 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Alec Lusk had 36 yards on 19 attempts.

Mingo Central (1-0) will hit the road this week as they travel to Tolsia. The improved Rebels upset perennial Class AA power Wayne 49-34 on Friday night.

Wyoming East (0-1) will host county rival Westside this week.
