MAN — The Man High School volleyball team has had some success over the years in the tenture of Coach Orlando Washington.
The Lady Billies have advanced to the the Class A state tournament in each of the last two seasons and have so far been the only team from Logan County to make it that far.
Man is coming off three straight winning seasons and Washington hopes that success will continue this season.
The Lady Billies are scheduled to open the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as Man is set to travel to Logan to take on county rivals Chapmanville Regional and the host Logan Lady Cats.
The Man High volleyball team has experienced success the last three years,” Washington said. “Each year our program has gotten a little better we have had winning seasons in each of those years a first under my coaching tenure. The past two years we have advanced to the state volleyball tournament.”
Last season, Man won its sectional and regional tournament championships to advance to the state tourney.
“So to say the least our expectations are a little higher this year,” Washington said. “Our goal is to represent ourselves and our region better if we are fortunate enough to advance to the state tournament this year. We want to win a match and after that try and win it all. This is a very ambitious goal, but with hard work and execution a goal that we could possibly achieve if we are playing well at the end of the season.”
Man lost senior and all-state performer Mika McCoy due to graduation but have a solid group coming back, Coach Washington said, led by seniors Hannah Harvey and Tiffany Belcher.
“I expect our two seniors Hannah Harvey and Tiffany Belcher to lead us to our best season yet,” Washington said. “I also expect my two juniors to be right up there with our seniors and they are Hunter Harvey and Shauntae Miller. Hunter is taking on a new role as our permanent setter and has done a good job so far. Hannah is one of the best hitters in Single A if not the state. Tiffany is a very good server and hitter for us and Shauntae is a good blocker and defensive player.”
Others who are expected to contribute for Man are four sophomores in Morgan Muncy, Lauren Zealy, Brooke Burgess and Breona Childress, and one freshmen in Addison Gibson.
“This group showed great chemistry in the summer time,” Washington said.
The rest of the roster consists of Sasha Moody, Ashley Vest, Allie Meade and Madie Meade.
