LENORE — The Lenore Middle School football team shook off last week’s frustrating loss by beating Matewan Middle School, 34-18, on Tuesday night at the Lenore football field in the Rangers’ home opener.
Lenore (1-1) was again led by Caleb May, who scored four out his team’s five touchdowns in the win.
May reeled in touchdown passes of 70, 40 and 19 yards from quarterback Joby Sorrell and also had a 5-yard TD run. Sorrell fired four TDs on the night.
The Rangers tallied its other touchdown on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Sorrell to Randall Horn.

Lenore led 14-0 after one quarter and 22-12 at the half and after three. The Rangers then outscored the Tigers 12-6 in the fourth to put the game away.
Matewan (0-1), playing in its season opener, also had several big plays but turned the ball over numerous times.
The Tigers, coach by Nick Varney, scored its first touchdown of the night on a 50-yard jaunt by Tanner Cisco.
Matewan scored twice on special teams during kickoffs. Brandon Allen had an 80-yard kickoff return for one of the scores, while Tyrell Hollis had a 50-yard touchdown on a kick return late in the fourth quarter.
Lenore, coached by Fred Russell and assisted by G. Gregory, was able to bounce back from last week’s season-opening 20-19 loss at Gilbert in a game the Lions won on the final play of the contest.
May scored all of Lenore’s three touchdowns last week. For the season, he’s scored seven out of the Rangers’ eight total TDs.
The Rangers are scheduled to get back into action on Thursday, Sept. 17 as Lenore travels to Seth to take on the Tide of Sherman Middle School. Matewan plays at Gilbert the same night.
Both games have 7 p.m. kickoff times.
