It was a big week for Logan County football last Friday night.
All three county football teams won their games and there were several big individual performances.
None were bigger than Logan High School’s Matthew Cox and Chapmanville Regional High School’s Alex Berry.
Cox and Berry were named this week as the Logan Banner Co-Athletes of the Week.
Cox, a senior running back for the Wildcats, rushed for 206 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 1 and 10 in Logan’s 42-12 road victory at Lincoln County.
Cox scored four touchdowns on the evening, also reeling in a 70-yard touchdown pass. He had two catches for 103 yards and an 8-yard kickoff return, giving him 317 all-purpose yards for the game.
Berry, Chapmanville’s senior quarterback and a three-year starter, was also outstanding in the Tigers’ 48-16 home win over rival Scott.
Berry tossed six touchdown passes on the night — five of them to his favorite target Dingess — as Chapmanville crushed the Skyhawks. Berry also had a 31-yard TD strike to Billy Sheppard late in the fourth quarter. Berry finished the game 14-of-18 passing for 317 yards and the six TDs.
Dingess, the Logan Banner’s Week 1 Athlete of the Week, reeled in touchdown passes of 23, 46, 46, 6 and 54 yards. He had seven catches for 187 yards on the night.
Logan (2-1) is scheduled to host Point Pleasant (3-0) this Friday night in the Wildcats’ home opener and annual Hall of Fame Game. It will be the first varsity home game for Logan on its new Field Turf.
Chapmanville (3-0), sitting all alone in first place in the Cardinal Conference standings, is slated to play at winless Poca on Friday night.
