Tigers roll over Poca Dots

POCA — The Chapmanville Regional High School football train keeps rolling along.

The latest stop was Poca on Friday night as the Class AA No. 5-ranked Tigers destroyed the Dots, 55-14, at Poca High School’s O.O. White Stadium.

It wasn’t even that close.

Chapmanville, which improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the Cardinal Conference, led 42-7 at the half, then emptied its bench.

Poca dropped to 0-4, 0-1 on the season and saw its losing streak hit 21 games. The Dots had an 0-10 winless season last year.

Several Tigers had big games.

Quarterback Alex Berry was 10-for-13 passing for 198 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.

Dylan Smith had four carries for 131 yards and caught two passes for 57 yards with two TDs.

Senior running back Tanner Dillon had 12 carries for 109 yards with one touchdown. He was a perfect 7-for-7 in extra point kicks.

Dillon opened the scoring with a 10-yard TD run at the 10:22 mark of the first quarter. After Dillon’s kick it was 7-0 CRHS.

Chapmanville scored just 18 seconds later with Berry’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Billy Sheppard. Dillon’s kick was good as the Tigers led 14-0.

With 2:09 left in the first quarter, Smith ran in for a 79-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 after the Dillon kick.

Then with 9:00 to go until the half, Berry passed a 19-yard TD to Smith to up the margin to 28-0. Dillon’s PAT was again good.

Poca got on the board and cut it to 28-7 at the 5:39 mark with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Kaden Meeks to Matthew Gibson. The extra point kick by Colton Walls was good.

The Tigers struck right back with 5:23 to go as Berry fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to Noah Dingess. After the Dillon PAT it was 35-7 Chapmanville.

Then with 3:44 remaining, Berry tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Dingess to make it 42-7 at the half. Dillon split the uprights on the PAT.

Chapmanville continued to pound the Dots in the second half.

With 9:32 to go in the third, the Tigers were in the end zone again with William Seigman’s 16-yard TD run. Dillon’s point after kick was good again as the Tigers led 49-7.

The Dots scored their last touchdown of the night with 1:06 showing on the clock as Joseph Cottrill scored on a 3-yard run. After the Walls PAT it was 49-14.

Then with 4:49 left in the game, Chapmanville scored one more touchdown with Dillon Renniger’s 35-yard run. The Tigers’ two-point conversion run failed as CRHS won 55-14.

Dingess finished the game with four catches for 65 yards.

Renniger had five rushes for 56 yards. Seigman had three tries for 39 yards. Adam Vance had three rushes for 30 yards and was 2-for-4 passing for 19 yards.

Brennan Williams had four totes for 21 yards and one catch for 13 yards.

Ethan Thompson added three carries for 22 yards and reeled in two catches for 11 yards. Sheppard snared two passes for 19 yards.

Ryan Craddock had six tackles and two assists to lead the Chapmanville defense. Austin Butcher had six solos and one assist.

Ethan Neace had three solo tackles and a forced fumble on a kickoff.

Andy Bias had two solos, two assists and a fumble recovery.

Timmy Bigley had two solo tackles and two assists.

Dillon finished with two solo tackles and a sack. Noah Dingess had two solos and a fumble recovery. Seth Whitt and Ricky Combs each had two tackles and an assist. Seigman had two solos on the night.

Thompson had one solo, one assist and a forced fumble on a kickoff. Jordan Whitt contributed one tackle and one assist. Alex Oxley had a tackle, an assist and a sack.

Christopher Dalton, Cade Elkins, Vance, Sheppard, Jacob Dingess, Christian Farley and Ethan Ferrell all had a tackle.

Renniger punted once for 30 yards.

The Tigers were penalized five times for 55 yards. Poca had 13 yellow hankies for 115 yards.

Chapmanville steps out of conference play and hosts 3A county rival Logan (2-2) this coming Friday night. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
