GILBERT — The Gilbert Middle School football team is having a very good season.
The Lions improved to 4-0 on the grid campaign with last Thursday’s 14-0 win at Belfry (Ky.).
Westan Christian led the Lions as he had 17 carries for 165 yards and a two-point conversion.
Anthony Hendricks finished with seven carries for 51 yards and a touchdown while Josh Lester had seven totes for 37 yards and the other touchdown.
Branson Nagy led the Gilbert defense with 10 tackles.
Jacob St. Clair had nine tackles and a fumble recovery, while Zach Patrick had eight stops and two quarterback sacks.
Christian added eight tackles, Dakota Jessie five and Preston Dingesss had a fumble recovery.
Gilbert rolled up 253 yards of total offense and held Belfry to only 26 total yards and three first downs.
Gilbert coach Jimmy Bragg said he was impressed with the win.
“Again, we were the smaller team on the field but our boys continue to show heart,” Coach Bragg said. “A couple mistakes on offense cost us a touchdown or two but our defense has been playing lights out. Anytime you hold a team to 26 total yards, I don’t care who it is, you are playing pretty good. Belfry is a good team. It was a good win for us, improving us to 4-0 on the season.”
Gilbert will be challeged this week as the Lions host Burch (4-1) and standout quarterback Drew Hatfield, who scored six touchdowns and threw for another in last week’s 50-8 win at home over Lenore.
Gilbert and Burch are set to meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Gilbert football field.
“This will be our toughest team so far with Burch,” Bragg said. “We are tied for number one in the county with them so something has to give on Thursday night. They are really good, but I think we have a pretty daggone good team too.”
Thursday’s game with Burch will be 8th Grade Night for GMS.
The 1995 Gilbert High School state championship team will also be recognized at halftime.
