GILBERT — The undefeated Burch Middle School football team handed Gilbert Middle its first loss of the season last Thursday with a 28-0 win over the Lions at the Gilbert football field.

Gilbert (4-1) was led by Westan Christian, who had 25 carries for 75 yards.

Anthony Hendricks had six carries for 16 yards, while Josh Lester had nine totes for 29 yards. Ethan Mendoza had seven rushes for 12 yards.

Gilbert QB Preston Dingess was 3-for-3 passing for 30 yards. Mendoza was 1-for-3 passing for seven yards.

Mendoza had two catches for 27 yards. Dingess snared one pass for seven yards and Hendricks had one grab for three yards.

Gilbert was held to 169 yards of total offense with 47 carries for 132 yards.

Hendricks led the Gilbert defense with five tackles. Christian had three, while Jacob St. Clair and Mendoza had two each.

Dingess had an interception and a fumble recovery. Lester also fell on a Burch fumble.

For Burch, Dougie Dillon had five carries for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Drew Hatfield had only four carries — two of them going for scores — for 140 yards.

Burch (5-0) had 297 yards of total offense for the game — all coming on the ground.

Gilbert coach Jimmy Bragg said his Lions ran into a very good Bulldog team.

“We knew coming in that Burch was going to be really tough with all that speed they have,” he said. “We wanted to use ball control to keep their offense off the field, but we just couldn’t punch it in the end zone. We didn’t tackle well at all. On both of Dillon’s touchdowns we had hands on him and he still got away from us. In big games you have to score points and you have to tackle and we did neither. We will be alright though. All of our goals are still there to be had. One loss doesn’t keep us from reaching them.”

Gilbert is scheduled to play at Williamson this Thursday night in a 7 p.m. kick.

“We have a big county game this coming week at Williamson. If we win, we will host a semifinal playoff game at Gilbert, probably against Lenore the week of the 19th.”

The Lions beat the Lenore Rangers in a 20-19 thriller in the season opener back on Sept. 2 at Gilbert as GMS scored the winning touchdown in the game’s final play.

Burch, which has secured the No. 1 spot for the upcoming Mingo County playoffs, hosts Matewan on Thursday night.
