County grid title on the line Friday

MAN — Just 15 years ago, the only county football teams playing each other were Logan and Man.

The Wildcats and Hillbillies have a long a storied rivalry — often playing each other in the season opener — in a series which dates back for many decades.

Logan and Chapmanville weren’t playing each other and Chapmanville and Man had put its non-continuous rivalry on the shelf.

Over the last 14 years, however, all Logan County teams have played each other in spirited series which has been enjoyed by many.

A traveling trophy has went to the county champions and the rivalries have only grown over the years.

Tonight, the county football championship will be on the line at Man High School’s George A. Queen Memorial Field as Class AA No. 4-ranked Chapmanville (6-0) locks horns with Class A No. 1 Man (5-0) in the battle of the unbeatens.

Since the Tigers and Hillbillies have both beat Logan already this season, the county title will be at stake tonight.

Chapmanville is looking for its second straight county championship and sixth overall. Man, which won the county title in 2004, is looking for its second crown. Logan currently leads in the overall county title count with six.

“We’ve managed to make this Man and Logan and Chapmanville series mean something with the county championship,” Chapmanville coach George Barker said. “My hats off to you all at the paper. It adds a little more excitement to it. We’re just happy to be in the situation that we’re in. When you play in Week 7 and the games mean something that means that you are having a pretty decent year. We’re just happy to be where we are.”

Barker said it’s great that both teams come into the game undefeated.

“It makes you be proud that you’re from Logan County,” he said.

Man and Chapmanville resumed its series in 2000. The Billies won the first six meetings. The Tigers have won eight out of the last nine including last year’s 26-20 double overtime thriller.

Chapmanville and Logan first played each other in 2001.
