Videos: Logan Toughman boxing first night

The 27th-annual Coal Area Toughman boxing contest rolled into Logan High School’s Willie Akers Arena on Friday evening for Night One of the weekend event.

Eighteen amateur bouts were on the card.

However, the highlight of the night was a men’s light heavyweight professional fight featuring “The Romantic Redneck” Melvin Russell of Greenup, Ky., going against Turner “Money” Williams of Beckley.

Russell improved to 3-0 in his pro career with a second-round knockout over Williams, who was making his professional debut. Russell was last year’s men’s light heavyweight Toughman champion in Logan.

In the first Toughman bout of the night, heavyweight Mike Shark of Cole Grove was a winner over Don Jemerison of Mallory in a first-round TKO.

Bout No. 2 went to Cody Warner of Leon, who won a heavyweight fight over Caleb Lovejoy of Danville in a decision.

Josh Workman of Man then won fight number three over Seth Adkins in a light heavyweight bout via third-round TKO.

In the fourth fight of the night, Jake Taft of Raceland, Ky., won in a decision over Dan Faine of Logan in a middleweight bout.

Lyburn’s Josh Blair then defeated Mike Glenn in a first-round KO in a lightweight bout.

In fight No. 6, Jeremiah Hatfield of Gilbert won in a split decision over Cody Spears of Lovely, Ky., in a heavyweight bout.

In the seventh bout of the evening, Charleston’s Colton Taylor scored a second-round KO over James McNeely of Man in a light heavyweight fight.

The eighth fight went to Kayla Frye of Holden in a women’s bout. She beat Anita Wade of Alum Creek in a unanimous decision.

Fight No. 9 was won by heavyweight Russell Rhodes of Charleston. He beat Andrew Johnson of Raccoon, Ky., in a decision.

Jacob White of Rio Grande, Ohio, then scored a first-round KO over Chris Newsome of Breeden in a light heavyweight bout.

The 11th fight was won by Omar’s Denis Idyle in a middleweight bout over Cody Ingels of South Point, Ohio, via decision.

John Hendricks of Gilbert took the 12th bout with a second-round TKO over Justin Adkins of Harts in a lightweight fight.

In the 13th fight of the night, Chris Holcomb of Madison won in a decision over Robear Caudill of Man in a heavyweight bout.

Chris Blankenship beat Cody Porter in a second-round TKO in a middleweight fight and Cody Taylor beat Ricky Browning in a decision in a light heavyweight fight.

Brad Browning also fought Traivs Whitten but no results were available. Johnathan Maynard went up against Cody Gooslin and Jason Caserta fought Paul Bowman in the final bouts of the evening.

Ryan Warren, Scotty Ray, Ronaldo Dominguez and Sabrina Lambert all received byes to second-round action on Saturday night.
