SETH — The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball team got its 2015-16 season off to a good start with Thursday night’s 33-25 road victory at Sherman.
CMS trailed 7-6 after one quarter and grabbed a 13-11 edge at halftime. A strong third quarter then gave the Lady Tigers a 25-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter. CMS then held off the Tide to get the win.
Lauren Hines led Chapmanville Middle with 12 points. K.K. Davis had eight, Hollee Blair five and Taylor Basiden and Olivia Dalton tossed in four points each.
“Charlie Mullins and Jayde Kuenzel also gave us some valuable playing time,” CMS coach Tommy Kirk said. “This was an ugly game, but it’s a win. We are learning to play together and find our roles. Following an undefeated season you usually have to replace a lot of missing parts. We have some kids that can play. We need to find what this team’s strengths and weaknesses are in actual game action. It’s a process.”
Next up for CMS is a home game Monday as a strong Duval Middle team comes to Tiger Town.
Chapmanville Middle School is scheduled to host the CMS State Farm Boys Showcase on Dec. 12 with six games, featuring teams from Mingo, Boone, Putnam, Wayne, Clay, Wyoming and Logan counties.
Games will start at 10.30 a.m. and will go all day finishing the day with the CMS vs. Hurricane game.
The CMS Nationwide Insurance Girls Showcase will be played on Dec.19 with the same format. The last game features host CMS against Clay County.
“These should be good days to come out and see our area basketball talent,” Kirk said.
WILLIAMSON — The Lenore Middle School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made it a sweep on Thursday with a doubleheader win at Williamson Middle School in the season opener.
