BRADSHAW — The Man High School girls’ basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a thrilling 36-29 victory on Thursday night over the Mountain Mission Challengers of Grundy Va., in the sixth-annual Little General Invitational tournament at River View High School in Bradshaw.
“We ran the floor well tonight. The girls hustled and never quit and we came out on top. It was a big win for us,” Man coach Tonia Ward said.
The Lady Billies were led by Sarah Blevins with a double-double with 10 rebounds and 12 points while senior point guard Summer Combs, the floor general, had double figures in scoring of her own with 12 points.
The game tied up at 10-10 after the first quarter of play. Man then outscored the Challengers 9-3, led by Combs’ three baskets to take a 19-13 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Lady Billies then outscored Mountain Mission 9-7 to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter of play leading 28-18. Blevins led the way in the frame.
Despite getting outscored 9-8 in the final stanza the Lady Billies held on for the win.
Man was scheduled play in Fridays night’s championship game against either River View or Hurley, Va.
Courtney Hinkle added five points for Man. Morgan Muncy and Emma Justice tossed in three points each and freshman Allie Meade scored one point.
The Challengers were led in scoring by Sara Bekele with 13 and Mihret Nicuhe with nine.
