MAN — The Man High School girls’ basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a second half surge on Monday night to erase a nine-point deficit at halftime to rally and beat Greater Beckley Christian 52-46 on Monday at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
Man (2-4) had previously lost 63-23 at River View on Dec. 4, 63-50 at home to Teays Valley Christian on Dec. 8, 53-22 at Fayetteville on Dec. 9 and 49-33 at Mingo Central last Friday.
“The second half told the tale and our pressure man-to-man defense was the difference,” Man coach Tonia Ward said. “We had several girls come off the bench and give us a lift in Chelsea Vance with some big steals and Brooke Burgess who helped spark us as well. Morgan Muncy got hot and hit some big 3-pointers and baskets and Summer Combs ran the floor well and Sara Blevins added some big buckets for us. We hit our free throws at the end. It was a big win for us.”
GBC jumped out to an early 12-8 first period lead as Brooke Daniels hit two 3-pointers for the Lady Crusaders while Sarah Blevins hit three field goals to lead the Lady Billies in the first stanza.
Morgan Muncy hit a jumper midway in the second quarter of play to cut the Beckley lead to 15-12.
Greater Beckley then went on an 8-2 run in the final three minutes of play to take a 23-14 advantage into the locker room, led by Jana Lehman’s five points in the last two minutes of play.
GBC extended its lead to 30-19 at the 3:20 mark of the third period.
Muncy completed an old fashion three-point play with a bucket and foul shot to make it 30-22 at the three-minute mark.
The Lady Billies then outscored the Lady Crusaders 8-2 to cut the margin to 28-32 heading into the final eight minutes of play. Muncy hit two 3-balls and freshman Allie Meade drained a two-point bucket.
Man came out with pressure defense and caused GBC to turn the ball over as the Lady Billies would cash in the mistakes for points and get their first lead of the game at 39-38 with 6:30 left in the game on a runner in lane by Summer Combs to give Man the lead for good.
Cortney Hinkle then hit a big basket to push the Man lead to 41-38 as the Lady Billies went on a 12-0 run, forcing GBC into a time out with Man leading 43-38 with 4:52 on the clock.
Chelsea Vance hit a key basket for Man and Morgan Muncy hit two free throws to push the MHS lead to 45-40 with four minutes remaining in the game.
Blevins later completed a big three-point play to push the Lady Billies’ lead to 48-41 with 3:19 to play.
Combs then sealed the deal, hitting four free throws in the final two mintues of play to preserve the Lady Billies’ victory as Man would outscore the Lady Crusaders 38- 23 in the second half.
Muncy led the Lady Billies with 16 points followed by Combs with 12 and Blevins with 11. Hinkle added six while Chelsea Vance, Allie Meade and Brooke Burgess had two points each.
Greater Beckley Christian was led in scoring by Lauren Smith with 24 and Lydia Jordan, who netted 10.
Jana Lehman had eight, Abby Hill two and Karlee Smith and Brooke Daniels had one point each. Man’s next game with be on the road at Westside on Thursday.
