Billies hang on to beat Knights

MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team held off the Mount View Golden Knights and came away with a 52-50 win on Tuesday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse in the Hillbillies’ season opener.

Man (1-0) led just 51-50 with 32 seconds left after Mount View’s De-Moni Edwards was able to drain a 3-pointer.

The Billies then turned it over but seconds later, Man’s Kenny Jo Adkins stole the ball right back and John Thomas Keffer was eventually fouled. Keffer split from the free throw line with 1.8 ticks to go, giving Man the two-point win.

Keffer, a senior guard, led the way for Man as he poured in 21 points.

Gabby Brown had 11 points and nine rebounds, while Erik Files finished with 10 points.

Adkins contributed five points, five steals and four blocked shots. Jake Adkins tallied five points and nine rebounds.

Edwards led the Golden Knights with 14 points, while Kenneth Brown netted 10. Ellis Bryson also had 10 points for Mount View.

The Billies were 22-for-33 from the free throw line and just 13-for-48 from the floor. Man hit four 3-pointers in the game.

Mount View led 10-9 after one quarter before the game was all tied up at 23 at halftime. Mount View led 33-29 after three but were outscored 23-17 in the fourth quarter.

Man had went up 46-45 with two minutes to go in the fourth as Keffer hit a pair of free throws. Files then canned a 3 as the lead swelled to 49-45 with 1:50 left.

Kenneth Brown was able to trim the lead to 49-47 with a runner in the lane but Files then answered with a pair of foul shots to make it 51-47 with 48 seconds left.

Man is not scheduled to play again until Dec. 28-29 at Chapmanville’s annual Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament.
