Tigers fall to Indians in Challenge

It was a Cardinal Conference flop on Saturday in the Big 10/Cardinal Conference Challenge at the West Virginia State University gym at Institute.

The Big 10 had a big day, going 7-1 in head-to-head games against the Cardinal Conference.

One of those wins was Bridgeport, which got past the Chapmanville Regional Tigers, with a 65-49 victory.

The Indians, playing in their season opener, led just 28-24 at the half. Bridgeport then rolled in the final two quarters, dropping Chapmanville to 1-1 on the season.

Bridgeport went on a 13-0 run to start the third quarter, taking a 41-24 lead.

The Indians were led by 6-foot-6 senior center Nick Greely, who tossed in a game-high 30 points. He drained a 3-pointer during the run.

Dante Bonamico, who helped lead Bridgeport win the Class AA state football championship just recently, netted 17 points in the win.

The Tigers were outscored 20-8 in the third to fall behind 48-32.

Chapmanville was led by sophomore guard Drew Williamson’s 17 points. No other Tiger reached double digits in scoring.

Hunter Haddix finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Donald Kummer dished out seven assists.

The lone win by the Cardinal Conference during the day was Poca’s 60-53 victory over Fairmoint Senior. Poca, the No. 1-ranked team in Class AA and the defending state champions, improved to 3-0 on the season. No. 2 Fairmont dropped to 3-1.

Elijah Cuffee tossed in 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Dots. Luke Frampton had 18 points and Kaden Meeks 17. Meeks was 5-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

In other Big 10/Cardinal Conference Challenge action on Saturday, CC team Sissonville (1-2) lost 68-61 to Lincoln (2-1).

Chance Brown led all scorers with 17 points. Nate Samples had 16.

Also on Saturday, Mingo Central (0-5) was blown out by Robert C. Byrd 60-34.

Dante Speas paced RCB (3-0) with 21 points. Dalton Hatfield had nine points for the Miners. Garrett Moore had six. Mingo Central was playing without senior starter Stevie Hammond, who broke his collarbone recently in the Miners’ football playoff game against Tolsia and is out indefinitely.

Big 10 team East Fairmont also was a winner Saturday, downing Herbert Hoover 54-47.

There were three other losses by the Cardinal Conference on Saturday as Grafton beat Scott, North Marion downed Tolsia and Philip Barbour defeated Wayne.


Man 75,

Greater Beckley Christian 71

The Man High School boys’ basketball team won 75-71 at Greater Beckley Christian last Friday night.

John Thomas Keffer and Cameron Simpson led the way for Man with 18 points each. Jake Adkins had 15 and Kenny Jo Adkins 14 for the Hillbillies.

Gabby Brown had six and Erik Files four.

Jake Adkins pulled down nine rebounds and Brown seven. Keffer dished out nine assists. Kenny Jo Adkins also had four steals.

Devin Acord led Greater Beckley with 26 points.

Man plays in the Chapmanville tourney Dec. 28 and 29.
