CHAPMANVILLE — The Man High School basketball team had to rally and eventually beat Pikeview 70-67 in dramatic fashion on Monday during the first night of the annaul Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament at Chapmanville Regional’s Danny Godby Gymnasium.

Man improved to 3-0 with the win and were slated to meet host Chapmanville in Tuesday night’s championship game. The young Tigers also had to rally, beating Mount View 50-46 to advance to the finals against the Hillbillies.

Pikeview dropped to 3-3 with the loss. The Panthers have been playing some good ball of late and only lost 55-52 at Bluefield on Dec. 21.

Man was down 67-64 with 21 seconds left in the game when John Thomas Keffer was fouled by Tyler Boyd while he was shooting a 3. Boyd was then hit with a technical foul as he questioned the call by the referees.

Keffer then stepped up to the line and hit all five free throws to give the Billies a 69-67 lead for good with 21 ticks on the clock.

Man’s Josh Adkins then added a free throw as Man won the game 70-67.

The Billies were led in scoring by Kenny Jo Adkins, who poured in 21 points. Keffer had 15 and Jake Adkins 14. Cameron Simpson and Josh Adkins tossed in seven each and Gabby Brown had four. Erik Files had two.

Seth Meadows led Pikeview with 25 points. Wayne Bookman had 19, Hunter Hill 15, Todd Vest six and Cecil Tyler two.

The Panthers raced out to a 21-15 first period lead over Man as Meadows drained a trio of 3-pointers during the stanza. Jake Adkins led the Billies with eight points.

Man rallied and took the lead midway in the second period on steals by Kenny Jo Adkins and Files as Man tied the game a 28-28 with 3:23 to play on Kenny Jo Adkins steal and fast break layup.

Keffer then hit a jumper to give MHS a 33-32 lead at the 1:59 mark.

Hill then hit a 3-pointer for the Panthers to give PVHS a 36-32 advantage with 1:40 to play in the first half.

Man then scored the final six points of the first half to take a slim 38-36 lead into the locker room. Kenny Jo Adkins had two baskets and Keffer added two free throws.

Kenny Jo Adkins hit a 3-ball with 4:06 left in the third quarter to give the Billies a 45-42 lead. Simpson came off the bench and sparked the Billies, hitting several 3-pointers as well to push the Man lead to 50-42 with 3:05 to go in the third.

Josh Adkins also came in the game and gave Man a big lift, hitting a 3-pointer of his own and Kenny Jo Adkins added a fast-break layup to give Man a 57-51 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Pikeview opened the fourth period on a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 57 with 6:18 left in the game and got the lead back over Man on a 3-pointer by Hill to make it 61-59 with 4:11 left.

Josh Adkins then hit a big 3-ball to give the Billies a 62-61 lead with 3:55 remaining in the game.

The Panthers then tried to milk the clock as Meadows hit two free throws with 31 seconds to play, giving PVHS a 67-64 lead.

Keffer then was fouled by Boyd on a 3-point attempt with 21 ticks on the clock.

Boyd then was hit with a technical as Keffer then drained all five free throws to give Man the lead for good at 69-67.

After taking on Chapmanville, Man is scheduled to host Greater Beckley Christian on Saturday night.
