MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team moved to 6-1 on the season with a 71-66 win over the Class AA Westside Renegades on Wednesday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Seniors John Thomas Keffer and Kenny Jo Adkins led the way with 26 points each while Keffer had a double-double with 10 assists. Jake Adkins also had a big game with a double-double of his own, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

“It was a tough game, up and down the floor. It was fast and physical and a very competive game,” Man coach Harvey Arms said.

The first quarter was very sluggish as neither team could find the basket, especially the Class AA Renegades, which missed their first 14 shots as Man took an 8-3 lead after the first period of play.

Westside’s first bucket came at the buzzer on a shot by Brian Choate.

In the second quarter the team settled in and started to play very competive basketball.

Jake Adkins got things started for Man with a 3-pointer to give MHS a 11-3 advantage at the 7:40 mark.

Kenny Jo Adkins scored on a fast break layup to give Man a 13-3 lead with 6:50 on the clock.

Westside then went on a mini 5-0 run to cut the Billies’ deficit to 13-8 with all five points scored by Tre Colucci.

Brock Smith scored later on a fast break layup off the glass to tie the game up at 18-18 with 2:41 left in the first half.

Man then went on a 5-0 run on an old-fashioned three-point play by Keffer and two free throws by Keffer to give MHS a 23-18 lead with 2:02 to play in the first half.

Westside scored the final four points of the first half on two free throws by Choate and an offensive stickback by Jacob Ellis as Man took a slim 23-22 lead into the locker room as the Renegades outscored Man 19-15 in the period.

Westside got its first lead of the game on a jumper by Shane Jenkins to make it 24-23 with 7:30 left.

Jenkins later hit two free throws to give WHS 30-26 lead with 5:11 to play.

The Billies battled back to take the lead on at 33-30 on baskets by Erik Files and 3-ball by Kenny Jo Adkins. Man scored the final four points of the third frame on a jumper by Keffer and a fast break layup by Kenny Jo Adkins to give the Billies a 43-40 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Jake Adkins hit another 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter and Cameron Simpson hit two free throws to give Man 48-40 lead with 7:21 to play. Jake Adkins hit a short jumper in the lane to make it 52-47 with 4:33 left in the game.

Westside battled back to cut the Billies’ lead to a single point at 52-51 on baskets by Jenkins and Jacob Ellis with 3:36 remaining. Kenny Jo Adkins then got an old-fashioned three-point play and another fast break basket to push the Man lead to 57-51 with 3:11 remaining.

Westside went on a 4-0 run to take a 63-60 lead with 65 ticks on the clockn but Keffer would seal the deal in the final minute of play hitting 8-of-8 free throws to give Man a hard fought 71-66 victory.

Erik Files netted four points for Man and Simpson had two.

Man was 50 percent from the floor, connecting on 24-of-48 free throws and was 4-for-9 from 3-point land and 19-for-23 from the free throw line for 82 percent.

Westside was led in scoring by Jenkins with 23 points. Colucci had 15 and Larry Cook netted 7. Chaote and Isaiah Lester had four each, Jordan Thornsbury three, Brock Smith two and Corey Hatfield one.
